Selway Fire Complex 2015

Selway Fire Complex 2015 Updates about the Baldy, Wash, and Noble fires near Elk City, Idaho and the people managing them. The Wash Fire is about nine miles northeast of Elk City.

The Baldy and Wash fires in the Selway Complex were caused by lightning strikes on August 10th and 13th in the Red River Ranger District of the Nez Perce National Forest near Elk City, Idaho. With dry conditions, gusty winds, steep terrain and a shortage of firefighting resources due to multiple fire starts and existing fires, the fires quickly grew. The Baldy Fire threatened homes in the Newsome

area of Elk City and the northern edge of the Wash Fire imminently threatened historic Meadow Creek cabins. Management of the fires in the Selway Complex are under the direction of the Southern Area Type 1 Red Incident Management Team. The area is in a prolonged drought, which is expected to continue. Fires are expected to be active until a significant, season-ending weather event occurs, which may not occur until mid/late October.

The Wildland Fire community is a small one, here are Dave and Brad. They worked on the Boundary Fire in Montana way back in 1994, here they are meeting back up on the Selway Complex.

Selway Complex 2015 is winding down. The Red Team is transitioning today with a Type 3 organization led by Incident Commander Chris Lundgren from the Red River Ranger District of the Nez Perce - Clearwater National Forest. The Red Team sends sincere thanks to the staff of the local Forest Service offices, to the communities in and around these fires, and to all our "cyber-friends' who have supported and encouraged us in our firefighting efforts. You'll never know how much it helps these firefighters to know all of you are following what we do and care about how we are! The Type 3 organization will continue posting information both here and on Inciweb (http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4574/ #). Please continue to follow their work and show them the same support you have offered to us! However, there will be only ONE Information Officer, so don't expect tons of posts each day! Text from video: Hi everybody. Mike Dueitt, Incident Commander of the Southern Area Red Team. Just wanted to talk a few minutes to thank all of the people who came here to the incident, dedicated their time and all their efforts.. safely.. and got all the work done that we've achieved since we've been here.

When we first got here, there wasn't a lot of resources available and we were mainly focusing on point protection. We got a little rain, and we were able to go a little more direct. The crews here have really worked hard. The efforts have really been appreciated by the locals.. We had three community meetings,.. very well received. And, those people, as well, were very grateful for what all we've done.

So, also wanted to take a few minutes to thank all the people support our firefighters and went to our social media sites we had populated with events as they were happening on the fire.

We know that... I KNOW personally that we can't do without a good support structure back home. We appreciate all the likes and shout outs and happy birthdays, and things like that, that were passed on.

So, until we see you again, we bid you farewell and thank you from the Red Team.

At the end of the day, no one will remember what we did. They remember how we made them feel. The places we have gone, and the people we have come to know... those are the things that will stay with us as we leave.... And, a little part of each of us will remain here in north Idaho with the wonderful people we have served.... We will miss you all.

Oh the Places We've Gone! Two of the best parts about fighting fires are all the places we "get" to go and all the wonderful people we "get" to meet! On top of that, we also "get" to help.... to make things better. Incident Management Teams are designed to bring order out of chaos. We learned a long time ago that people don't really remember what you did; they remember how you made them feel. These pics are little reminders of the places we've been while working the Selway Complex Fires in 2015.... There are lots more... feel free to add your pics in the comments section!

Paramedics from Madison Fire Department have been handling the many cases of coughing, sneezing, congestion, common cold types of issues in camp. Pictured here are Ricky Mitchell and Brandon Hafen. But, other than the "Camp Crud" which is common when this many people live and work together in close quarters for extended periods of time, these guys haven't had much to do! We like it that way! Selway Complex has had an excellent safety record with NO lost time accidents. (photo by Bonnie Strawser/USFS)

DEMOB day... (for some).... A standard fire assignment is 14 days, plus travel. Safety regulations require strict work/rest ratios, plus strict requirements for R&R (Rest and Relaxation). During critical times, firefighters may extend the 14 days to 21, but they MUST have two days of R&R to work past 21 days. Because these folks are demobing today, it means they have 1) finished their 14 days, 2) finished their extension (21 days), 3) took two days R&R and started another 14, or 4) they were surplus to our needs at this point in the fire. With the Selway Complex Fires winding down, our resource numbers are reducing daily, so our DEMOB folks are really busy! (photos by Bonnie Strawser)
