๐ ๐ถ Elizabethtown Independent Schools joins the music education community in mourning the passing of Chuck โWinderโ Smith, a respected band director and music educator whose influence reached generations of students and musicians across Kentucky.
To countless students and colleagues, Chuck was a gifted educator, an encouraging mentor, an inspiring presence and a true friend. Above all, he devoted himself to young people, helping generations of students find confidence, purpose and their own voices through music.
His legacy lives on through the countless musicians, educators and students he inspired throughout his career, including those he impacted during his time at Elizabethtown High School. He led the marching band to three consecutive state titles from 1993-95. He was honored as the Kentucky Phi Beta Mu Outstanding Young Band Director in 1994 while at Elizabethtown.
Smith guided the Lafayette High School Marching Band to a record-tying 18 Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) state championships and 21 overall state titles, including numerous Class 5A first-place finishes and Grand Championships. Although some think he is best known for leading the Lafayette in Lexington, those in Elizabethtown believe he made his mark here.
Our thoughts are with Smithโs family, friends, former students and colleagues during this difficult time. ๐๐ถ ๐พ
