Our Elizabethtown Public Works Department takes great pride in providing safe, clean streets for our citizens to travel.
People are sometimes confused about what constitutes a city maintained street. When they see deteriorating pavement in a private parking lot, or occasionally on a state maintained roadway, they often contact City Hall, Public Works, or take to social media to voice their concerns.
Recently, we received multiple complaints regarding large potholes on private property off Ring Road near the entrance to Academy Sports, Hobby Lobby, and Buffalo Wild Wings. Over the past several weeks, we have repeatedly contacted the property owners and have even taken enforcement action due to the conditions. The lack of response we have received is unacceptable.
This morning city crews placed a temporary patch on the potholes to address the immediate safety concern. Tomorrow morning, permanent repairs will be made. To facilitate this work, the entrance to the shopping center from Ring Road will be closed beginning at 7:30 AM. Motorists should plan to use the Woodland Drive entrance while repairs are being made.
This is not a precedent we wish to set, as these repairs are not the City's responsibility and will not become standard practice. However, we believe we have reached an impasse, and the potholes must be repaired before additional vehicle damage occurs or worse, someone is injured. The City will be billing the property owners for the cost of these repairs.
Please understand that this is not a reflection on the businesses located there. Responsibility for maintaining this property rests with the development's owner.
Thank you for your understanding and patience as these repairs are completed.
