Schools are officially out for the summer, which means more teen drivers are on the road. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, and the days spanning between Memorial Day and Labor Day are often referred to as “The 100 Deadliest Days” since there is a dangerous spike in teen traffic fatalities. During the 100 Deadliest Days, teens are 20% more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than they are during the rest of the year with inexperience, distracted driving, and other factors contributing to the spike of fatalities.

Parents and guardians have more influence on the teens in your life than you think. Here are some driver safety tips to practice and share with teen drivers:

🔹 Use seatbelts at all times
🔹 Slow down and follow the speed limit
🔹 Put phones down, on “Do not disturb,” or set up for hands-free driving
🔹 Keep eyes on the road and hands on the wheel
🔹 Obey all traffic signs and laws
🔹 Never drive while drowsy or impaired
🔹 Minimize the amount of teen passengers
🔹 Avoid eating and drinking

Pennsylvania’s Paul Miller’s Law prohibits the use of hand-held mobile devices while driving. This means drivers cannot hold or use a handheld cellphone, tablet or other electronic device for any interaction including texting, calling or browsing. The law not only covers active driving but includes driving while stationary at a red traffic light or stop sign. Effective today, June 6, 2026, law enforcement will have the ability to issue summary citations to violators.

Under Paul Miller’s Law, drivers can still use their phones to alert emergency responders and, if they are using hands-free technology, to make phone calls, use a GPS, and listen to music.

Phones should be put away, on “Do not disturb” or mounted on the dashboard for safe hands-free driving.

Knowing CPR can save a life in your community. ❤️

June 1-7 is National CPR and AED Awareness Week, spotlighting how lives can be saved if more Americans knew CPR and how to use an AED. About 70% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes. Knowing CPR in an emergency can triple the chance of survival when applied by a trained bystander.

Hands-only CPR has been shown to be as effective in the first few minutes as conventional CPR for cardiac arrest and can be performed in just two easy steps:

1. Call 911 if you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse.
2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat to a familiar song like “Stayin’ Alive” that has 100 to 120 beats per minute.

This summer, practice water safety.

As May comes to a close and temperatures rise, there is an increase in activities in and around water. It’s important to remember water safety practices including learning to swim, understanding water hazards, and practicing safe behavior in and around water. Keep you and your family safe this summer and remember these tips when participating in water activities:

🔹 Always supervise kids and teens when they are in or around water, even if they know how to swim.
🔹 Learn to swim and teach children how to swim.
🔹 Set water safety rules.
🔹 Stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings.
🔹 Use life jackets. When used appropriately, life jackets protect you when you are not expecting to be in the water, especially around open water.
🔹 Swim in areas with lifeguards.
🔹 Do not rely on swimming aids like pool noodles or inner tubes. These items are recreational and should not replace an approved life jacket.
🔹 Avoid distractions when watching children in or around water. Drowning is often silent and can occur in less than five minutes. It’s crucial to provide your full attention.
🔹 Wear bright and neon colored swimwear. Bright colors are recommended as the safest choice since they are most easily detectable in various depths of water.

MAY we recap? Here’s a look back at the moments that filled our month.

At the beginning of the month, MESA Captain John Halbleib represented MESA and displayed equipment at a recent Conoy Township Open House.

Throughout the month, MESA proudly provided standby service at Mayfest in Maytown, several high school and college graduations and at the Elizabethtown Rotary Mother's Day 5K.

Coming up, we’re excited to close out the month by participating in both the Elizabethtown and Maytown Memorial Day parades on May 25th. If you see our MESA team and ambulances rolling by, give us a wave!

This National EMS week, it is our honor to shine a light on our dedicated team of EMTs, AEMTs and paramedics! May 17-23 is a designated week to thank and recognize EMS professionals who provide critical and lifesaving care in communities across the nation every day.

We are proud to celebrate our MESA EMT employees as they continue to grow professionally with many recently earning their Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) certifications and several others announcing plans to enroll in Paramedic school! We’re consistently proud of their dedication to their careers and furthering their education to advance MESA’s prehospital care for our community

We are so grateful for our compassionate and driven team here at MESA. Their commitment to the community and to their profession is unmatched. Not only do they provide a critical service every day, but they are active within the communities they serve from providing a helping hand to educating on safety. They deserve to be celebrated for their selflessness not only this week but every day of the year.

The MESA team is celebrating this week with a Primo Hoagies lunch and a huge thank you to each Platoon Captain for going out of their way to coordinate additional cookouts with their crew as another way to celebrate.

Thank you to the MESA EMTs, AEMTs and paramedics and all EMS professionals for all you do! We encourage you to take a moment this week to show your appreciation to all the EMS professionals in your life.

We are proud to share that three MESA employees have completed the “Train-the-Trainer” Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) series!

EVOC is the foundation of safe emergency driving. This training prepares first responders for real-world challenges of operating emergency vehicles under high-stress, high-speed situations when lives are on the line. Emergency driving is not the same as everyday driving. Responders face unique risks like speeding through intersections, weaving through heavy traffic, or responding in rain and darkness.

Earning their certifications for the “Train-the-Trainer” EVOC series now allows them to act as EVOC trainers. This accomplishment allows MESA to offer EVOC training both internally and externally!

Congratulations to our exceptional staff on this accomplishment and the continued dedication to keep our community safe.

Motorcyclists’ safety is everyone’s safety. May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and motorcycle safety is a responsibility for all road users. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 6,228 motorcyclists were killed in 2024 — 15% of all traffic fatalities. All road users can help reduce the number of motorcyclist fatalities and injuries by:

🔹Observing all traffic laws and obeying the speed limit.
🔹Driving and riding alcohol- and drug-free.
🔹Avoiding distractions while driving or riding.
🔹Yielding to motorcyclists especially when vehicle drivers turn at intersections.
🔹Remembering to always share the road and be alert.
🔹Remembering to always wear a helmet as a motorcyclist.

April is distracted driving awareness month.

Any activity that diverts attention away from the task of driving is considered distracted driving. From the most common distraction of cell phone use including texting, talking and social media to other distractions of eating, applying makeup and adjusting the radio, distracted driving is extremely dangerous. In 2023 alone, distracted driving killed over 3,000 individuals.

As a reminder, in Pennsylvania, Paul Miller’s Law prohibits the use of hand-held mobile devices while driving. This means drivers cannot hold or use a handheld cellphone, tablet or other electronic device for any interaction including texting, calling or browsing. The law not only covers active driving but includes driving while stationary at a red traffic light or stop sign.

Reduce the risk for yourself and those around you by following these steps:

🔹 Phones should be put away, on “Do not disturb” or mounted on the dashboard for safe hands-free driving.
🔹 Avoid eating while driving.
🔹 Do your grooming such as applying makeup or shaving before or after you drive.
🔹 Secure pets and kids with seat belts and car seats.
🔹 Avoid multitasking that takes your eyes off the road or your hands off the wheel.
