Visitors will get a rare opportunity to visit the McClung-Morgan House during the 19th Annual Wirt County Pioneer Day on October 1. House owner, Richard Lowe, will be conducting guided tours from 11 am until 2 pm.
Prior to 1903, Dr. Parker Walker McClung built this stately brick home at 423 Market Street, Elizabeth WV. It is one of the earliest homes still standing. Visitors will get a rare peak into the lives of Dr. McClung, his wife Kate Nuzum McClung and their four children. Dr. McClung was the physician for Wirt County in the early 1900s and served in World War I as a Captain in the Army Medical Corps from July 1918 to May 1919 in France.
Two of the surviving grandchildren of the McClung's have donated many items belonging to Dr. McClung and Kate. They desired to bring public awareness of the historical home and the McClung family. Some of the items are military pieces used by Dr. McClung during World War I, medical items he used in his practice in Wirt County, several letters and postcards he wrote to Kate while he was away at war, and McClung and Nuzum family photographs. Medical ledgers (1900-1924) containing many Wirt County names are also on display.
