The library will be closed today, Sept 5th to observe the Labor Day Holiday. A day celebrated since the late 1800s, it was meant to recognize the contributions that workers have in our country. The labor movement of the 19th century is where the idea originated. After someone suggested a celebration to the Central Labor Union, the first parade (sponsored by the Knights of Labor) to celebrate American workers took place on September 5, 1882 in New York City. That was 144 years ago today! It was adopted by multiple unions and by 1887, many states assigned legal status to the holiday. The first Monday of September would be Labor Day. In June 1894 after a worker’s riot in Cleveland and a strike in Illinois, President Grover Cleveland signed it into law for the whole country as a way to nationally commemorate workers in the United States. This year it will be Monday, September 7th.
Nowadays, Labor Day is commemmorated in many different ways. However you celebrate, have a safe and wonderful weekend. See you next week at the library!

In two weeks, the library will be hosting two programs in partnership with the York River Stewardship Committee's Celebrate York River Month.
Thursday, Sept 17th at 6 PM we have Jill Crosbie from Great Works Land Trust coming to do an informative presentation on invasive species and native plants.
Saturday, Sept 19th at 1 PM we will have marine debris art presented by Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation. This event is also supported by funding from the York River Stewardship Committee.
We look forward to learning about the impact we can have on our local environment and marine habitats. Thank you to the folks we have worked with to put these programs on!

Wow! We had such a successful Summer Reading Program this year and that is all thanks to you! The library saw a 70% increase in sign-ups. We can't type out all 195 thanks but, Thank You Thank You Thank you! Your reading and participation mean everything. Congratulations to all our prize winners! Don't forget to come pick up your prize if you weren't able to get it last weekend!
A special shoutout to Zia Murphy for performing at the celebration this past Saturday. We had a blast!!
And, of course, thank you to every business and organization that donated something for a prize. Your support helps us put on the best program for our patrons and we appreciate you all!

Tomorrow we start celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month with the American Library Association. Do you know someone eligible for a free library card with William Fogg Library? Send them on over! Anyone who signs up for a card in the month of September will be able to celebrate by adding their name to our musical staff. No matter what your rhythm, the library has something to offer you!
