BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN YOU VOTE !!!

I have had several complaints about the way the Ballot appears - with the New Voting System - in Elgin.

According to several people, when voting for City Council candidates, one candidate's name does not appear with the rest of the candidates on the screen.

YOU MUST click on a box at the bottom of the screen to see that name appear.

This is also the case for at least 2 of the Democrats on the ballot for the Elgin Township.

This is a grave injustice to these candidates and to those who trust in their leadership and trust in our democratic voting processes to be fair to their candidacy.

It means that voters who do not know enough to click through to see their names, are not presented with an equal opportunity to cast ballots for them.
PLEASE BE DILIGENT WHEN YOU VOTE

ELGIN TOWNSHIP DEMOCRATIC SLATE -2025

Along with an excellent slate of people, I'm running for Township Supervisor. A position that I can hold - in addition to my County Board Seat.

There are several key changes I believe are needed at Elgin Township. One is that I want to see better participation from BOTH parties on Township Committees. This particularly holds for the Mental Health Committee - a matter that has not- in my opinion - been handled properly.

We also want the Township to REACH OUT more to the community. We will start that initiative by scheduling weekend events (4 each year) on various topics.

Initial topics will be: HOW TO START & GROW A SMALL BUSINESS; PET EXPO-HEALTH, TRAINING; LATINO HERITAGE; - and more to come.

SO - MAKE SURE TO VOTE ON APRIL 1!!

ELGIN TOWNSHIP FUNDRAISER - THURSDAY JAN 23 - 6-8 PM AT CARMINA'S

There will be lots of food available!!!

_______________________________________________________________________________________

On the April 1 Ballot, Kane County will have a Sales Tax Referendum - $0.75 cents per $100.00 - for Public Safety.

Kane has not had any substantive tax increases for years. Most recently Kane has been able to delay tax increases by using Covid Funds to balance the budget.

If we want to properly provide the services that Kane County requires, we need to pass this referendum. I WILL BE VOTING YES & I HOPE THAT YOU AGREE,

Naloxone is a medication that can quickly reverse an opioid overdose by blocking the effects of opioids. It restores normal breathing within 2 to 3 minutes in a person whose breath has slowed or stopped due to an opioid overdose. If you’re in Kane County, you can obtain free naloxone from the Kane County Health Department. Remember, more than one dose of naloxone may be needed when dealing with stronger opioids like fentanyl!😊

Illinois' Good Samaritan Law (PA-096-0361) took effect in 2010, making it legal in Illinois for non-medical persons to administer the drug overdose reversal medication Naloxone to another individual in order to prevent an opioid/heroin overdose from becoming fatal.

GUN SAFETY - CABLE LOCKS AVAILABLE REPEAT!!

Over 40% of our homes have guns, but a large percentage of those guns are not secured. One way to secure them is with a Cable Lock. Kane County Health Dept has some available - at no cost. If you want one - just reply to this email & I will see that it is delivered TO YOU!

ILLINOIS SENIOR TAX FREEZE – UPDATE-Jan 2025 - STILL NOTHING NEW TO REPORT

This will require our State Legislators to pass a bill to correct this. The opposition to this issue - mainly from Chicago - is fierce. I don't know why. I recently met with Kane County's Lobbyists and encouraged them to keep working on this issue.
Again– I WILL KEEP WORKING ON THIS ISSUE!!!

The COLA increases in Social Security for 2022 (5.9%), 2023 (8.7%) and 2024 (3.1%) (a cumulative 18.7% increase) will mean that many seniors will lose their eligibility for this benefit. Let’s raise the household income limitation amount to $75,000 so that this does not happen. Even if you lost your eligibility this year, you won't lose the accumulated discount if you're eligible next year.

Thanks to ALL of you for supporting me. I have received numerous POSITIVE FEEDBACK on these emails. I will continue to strive to keep them informative and relevant.

This one includes a BRIEF survey on one way to deal with the 'Finance Gap' that the county is facing. Thanks - in advance - for sharing your opinion. And - PLEASE - forward this email to your friends. - Vern

Going forward, Kane has a major gap in Revenue vs Expenses that will require either additional revenue, extreme personnel cuts, or a combination of both.

I made a presentation to the Finance Committee on March 27 regarding this issue and the major alternatives that the Kane Board has to consider. I have uploaded this 12-minute presentation to my website & Youtube, and have included a link for those who may want to view it.

Kane FinancialCrisis - YouTube (YouTube link)

Federal COVID funds have enabled us to balance our budget (required) for the past several years. But we are now dipping into our reserves which is not an effective way to finance the County. And, we also need more space for Courts, Personnel, and to replace aging buildings. We have a long-term plan to accomplish this, but effective funding is required to make this happen.

_________________________________________________________________________________

One way to provide the additional funding is to increase our Sales Tax. This is how DuPage County finances most of their operations.

A Referendum would be required in order to increase Kane's Sales Tax, and that option is being discussed now.

So, I've included a brief survey - just on my own - so I can be guided by YOU on what should/might transpire on this issue.

Please reply to this email with your choice of one of the following three options: A, B or C

A- 1.0% increase in the Sales Tax (that would generate approximately $68 million per year).

B - .5% increase in the Sales Tax (would generate approx. $34 million) (and if you vote for A, I assume you would also vote for B).

C - NO to any increase in Sales Tax (which would require that we purse the other options in my presentation above).

AND - feel free to add your comments. I'll publish the results in my next email.

New Health Department building - NEW DEVELOPMENTS

In my last communication I said that I supported a new building in St Charles.

I still wish that would happen - BUT, other alternatives, that are far less expensive, and are very acceptable, have arisen.

What looks most likely is a 2-Location solution. We're evaluating purchasing a building in Elgin that would complement our current building in Aurora and allow us to, more effectively, deliver services in the Northern portion of the County. Although I would prefer a new location in St Charles, the economics of doing this is far less than a new building.

The new Elgin building could also house other County Services as well as a training & meeting room.

ILLINOIS SENIOR TAX FREEZE – UPDATE (REPEAT)
There are several bills in the State House on this issue this year. The 'resistance' is that it shifts the tax burden to everyone else. So, there is not enough support, at this time, to get the limit changed. So, nothing will happen until this fall, and even then. it may not pass.
BUT – I WILL STILL KEEP WORKING ON THIS ISSUE!!!
