The climbing community is vital to our park; keeping you safe is our top priority. This summer, we’ve seen an unusually high number of serious accidents and complex rescues.

On August 12th, a climber survived a nearly 90-foot fall from the Vertigo rappels when an un-knotted rope end passed through their device. We believe the party was attempting to bail quickly due to weather concerns. That same night, another party required assistance on the Whale’s Tail due to a stuck rope, lack of headlamps, and a late start.

Eldorado offers world-class climbing, but its terrain is serious, weather can change quickly, and rescues are challenging.

Please help us keep our community safe:

• Respect the weather. Storms move fast. Don’t commit to unfamiliar terrain when weather or darkness is approaching.

• Don’t sacrifice the basics. Rushing to beat a storm can lead to critical mistakes. Slow down and use proper systems every time.

• Pack for the unexpected. Bring a headlamp and extra layer, even for a short route. Stuck ropes and changing weather can turn a quick climb into a long night.

We all make mistakes. Take your time, plan ahead, and give Eldorado the respect it deserves.

🚨 INCIDENT REPORT 🚨
Officer: Ranger Jim Schwartz (aka: Hummingbird Hero)

Date: Aug. 13, 2026 | Time: 09:35 Hours

Suspect: One Selasphorus calliope (Calliope Hummingbird), D.O.B. unknown.

While on patrol, Ranger Jim was flagged down by a concerned climber reporting an emergency: a hummingbird was trapped in the main parking lot women’s restroom, repeatedly bumping against sealed windows.

Arriving at the scene, Ranger Jim loudly announced his presence and radioed for a net. None was available,so Entrance Station staff Danny stepped up with the ultimate tactical gear: a blue plastic bucket.

After a high-stakes, low-speed pursuit inside the facility, Ranger Jim successfully trapped the suspect mid-air under the bucket and escorted it to the exit. Upon release, the bird fled southwest at high speed, presumably in search of nectar. Due to public safety and its extreme aerial speed, pursuit was terminated.

Case closed at 09:53. 🕵🏼‍♂️🚨
