🚨 RIVER SEARCH & RESCUE — 08/29/2026

At approximately 8:40 PM on Saturday, August 29, Eldora Fire & Rescue was dispatched for a report of a woman missing along the river. The individual had last been seen at approximately 5:00 PM.

A large-scale search operation was initiated with assistance from multiple agencies and resources.

Responding agencies included:
• Eldora Fire & Rescue
• Eldora EMS
• Eldora Police Department
• Hardin County Sheriff’s Office
• Steamboat Rock Fire Department
• Iowa Falls Fire Department
• Hardin County E-Squad
• Grundy County Sheriff’s Office
• Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office
• Webster City Police Department
• Iowa Department of Natural Resources
• Iowa State Patrol

The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office and Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office deployed drones to assist with the search. The Webster City Police Department deployed a K-9 team, and the Iowa State Patrol provided an aircraft equipped with thermal imaging. Iowa Falls Fire Department deployed a boat to search the river; however, due to extremely low water levels, crews were required to conduct much of the river search on foot.

At approximately 11:00 PM, members of Steamboat Rock Fire Department and Iowa Falls Fire Department located the missing individual alive.

The individual was brought to awaiting EMS personnel at approximately 11:16 PM for evaluation and care.

Eldora Fire & Rescue would like to thank every agency and responder who assisted with this operation. Searches like this require significant coordination, personnel, specialized equipment, and teamwork across jurisdictional lines.

Most importantly, this search ended with the outcome everyone was hoping for — the missing individual was found alive.

Thank you to all agencies involved for the outstanding teamwork and cooperation.

TRAINING. TEAMWORK. PRIDE.

Tonight at 4:30 PM, members of Eldora Fire Rescue will be doing drill training as we prepare for the Iowa Firefighters Association Drill Competition on September 12th in Manchester, IA.

We’ll also be training:

A big community thank-you goes out to Fareway Stores Eldora for donating a full pallet of bottled water to Eldora Fire Rescue!

Having water readily available is important for keeping our firefighters hydrated during training, emergency calls, and long-duration incidents.

We also appreciate the City of Eldora Street Department for helping transport the pallet from Fareway to the fire station.

Support like this makes a real difference, and we are grateful to have such great local partners!

Training Never Stops

This evening, Eldora Fire Rescue had the opportunity to revisit last week’s structure fire with the homeowner’s permission as part of an after-action review.

Our crews walked through the incident from start to finish, discussing what went well, where we can improve, and what we may have done differently. Honest conversations and learning from every call are essential to becoming a stronger, safer, and more effective fire department.

We sincerely appreciate the homeowner for allowing us back into their home to conduct this valuable training. Their generosity helps us better prepare for future emergencies and ultimately benefits our entire community.

Every call is an opportunity to learn. Every training makes us better.

Yesterday’s Storm Response

As yesterday’s storms moved through our area, Eldora Fire Rescue responded to assist our community with storm cleanup and damage assessment.

Our crews worked alongside City of Eldora crews and Alliant Energy, removing multiple trees that were blocking roadways and helping restore safe travel throughout the community. We also assisted Hardin County Emergency Management with conducting storm damage assessments.

We’d like to thank the Steamboat Rock Fire Department for providing mutual aid to help assess storm damage and identify additional blocked roadways. Working together allows us to respond more efficiently and get our communities back to normal as quickly as possible.

Thank you to all of the first responders, public works employees, utility crews, emergency management personnel, and volunteers who worked together to keep our communities safe.

Eldora Fire Rescue was dispatched to a hay baler fire.

261 responded with 5 firefighters, and 264 responded with 1 firefighter. Crews made a quick knockdown of the fire using water, then transitioned to Class A foam to thoroughly extinguish the remaining hot spots and help prevent rekindling.

Thanks to the rapid response and coordinated efforts of our firefighters, the fire was quickly brought under control, limiting damage and allowing crews to return to service safely.

🚒 Eldora Fire Rescue Incident Recap

Last evening at approximately 6:00 PM, Eldora Fire Rescue was dispatched to a reported back porch fire that was spreading to a residence.

Engine 261 responded with three firefighters. Upon arrival, crews found the fire had extended from the porch into the garage and attic, requiring an immediate aggressive fire attack.

Two firefighters staffing Eldora EMS were already on duty and assisted with hose deployment and pump operations. Engine/Tanker 264 responded with one additional firefighter to support operations.

Due to the rapidly expanding fire, mutual aid was requested from the Steamboat Rock and New Providence Fire Departments. Firefighting efforts were made more challenging by limited access to the rear of the home because of both a wooden privacy fence and a chain-link fence.

Three hose lines were deployed from Engine 261:
• One to the rear of the residence
• One into the garage
• One through the interior of the home

As crews battled fire that had spread into the attic, conditions became increasingly difficult. Additional mutual aid was requested from the Hubbard and Union Fire Departments for additional manpower. However, those departments were canceled prior to arrival after the Incident Commander made the strategic decision to transition from an offensive interior attack to a defensive operation.

The Hardin County E-Squad assisted Eldora EMS by providing firefighter rehabilitation, ensuring crews remained hydrated and medically monitored throughout the incident.

During the operation, Engine/Tanker 264 cleared the scene so Ladder 262 could respond and provide aerial support. Firefighters remained on scene for just over four hours performing fire suppression, overhaul, and extinguishing remaining hot spots.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Steamboat Rock Fire Department, New Providence Fire Department, Hardin County E-Squad, Eldora EMS, Eldora Police Department, and all personnel who assisted. Incidents like this demonstrate the importance of mutual aid, training, and teamwork in protecting our community.
