4/27/26 - Notice of Level 1 Drought Response and Voluntary Water Conservation Tips
The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) monitors climatic indicators and water supply conditions to assess drought occurrence and severity, as directed by the Drought Management Rule adopted in June 2015.
Currently, the entire state is experiencing varying levels of drought conditions, including Exceptional and Extreme Drought across much of Georgia.
As a result, the EPD Director has declared a statewide Level 1 Drought Response for all public water systems utilizing surface water and/or groundwater.
Allowed Activities Under Level 1 Drought Response:
· Irrigation of personal food gardens may occur at any time of day.
· Irrigation of newly planted or replanted plants, seeds, or turf is permitted at any time for up to 30 days after installation.
· Drip irrigation, soaker hoses, and hand watering (with an automatic cutoff nozzle or handheld container) may be used at any time.
· General landscape watering is permitted between 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m.
Voluntary Water Conservation Tips
City of Elberton and Elberton Utilities encourage all customers to voluntarily reduce water usage. The following tips can help conserve water:
1. Fix leaks immediately—check both inside and outside your home regularly.
2. Turn off the tap when shaving, brushing teeth, washing your face, or preparing food.
3. Check toilets for leaks by adding food coloring to the tank; if color appears in the bowl after 10 minutes, a leak is present.
4. Only run dishwashers and washing machines when fully loaded.
5. Upgrade to high-efficiency toilets and showerheads. Homes built before 1993 may qualify for a toilet rebate.
6. Choose efficient appliances with EPA WaterSense and ENERGY STAR labels, which use at least 20% less water than standard models.
7. Scrape dishes instead of rinsing and minimize use of garbage disposals, which waste water and can contribute to clogs.
8. Water plants only when necessary—use a rain gauge and limit watering to no more than 1 inch per week, during approved hours (4:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m.).
9. Reduce turf areas and incorporate plants that are well adapted to the local climate.
10. Adjust sprinklers to ensure water is applied only to landscaped areas, not streets, sidewalks, or buildings.
The City of Elberton and Elberton Utilities appreciate your cooperation and commitment to conserving our community’s water resources.
