Please keep your pets on leash when visiting our parks in sensitive habitat areas.

A couple of days ago the piping plover monitors found one of our important breeding adult female plovers dead--it was apparently killed by a dog that was off leash. While no one saw the incident, there were dog tracks in the area that indicated a chase had ensued, there were pounce marks and then the torn carcass remained, all indicators of domestic dog attack.

This is why it is so important to keep dogs on leashes and out of our piping plover nesting areas (all areas are signed/marked closed to dogs). There are only 75 adult nesting pairs in the Great Lakes population of the endangered piping plover, and so far this season half of these birds are nesting within the National Lakeshore. Losing a female breeding bird is all the more heartbreaking. The nest was due to hatch in 7 days. We've collected the eggs and transported them to a facility that will incubate them--hopefully some of those eggs will hatch and the chicks will fledge.

He’s had a long life and dozens of chicks. But most importantly, he’s a symbol of prosperity for a rebounding species and region.

Now, wouldn't this be a great place to practice stand-up paddleboarding?
