The El Segundo Police Department Police Officers' Association was established in 1949 to represent sworn members of the El Segundo Police Department. The City of El Segundo has a population of approximately 20,000 residents and during the daytime rises to approximately 100,000 because of the influx of workers who work in our wonderful city. The El Segundo POA has a total of 55 members. The El Segu

ndo POA is active in our community by supporting many charities and public awareness events. From donating funds to our schools, athletic organizations and the El Segundo Teen Center, the ESPOA strives to assist in any way we can. We are proud of the service we provide and the leadership role law enforcement serves in our community. We strive daily to provide a safe and secure community while treating all others with dignity and respect. A Board of Directors consisting of the President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and three board members, governs the El Segundo POA. Its members elect the Board every year.

Nine out of ten people who attempt su***de and survive do not go on to die by su***de later.

That figure comes from Harvard's Means Matter project, drawing on a review of ninety studies. It is worth sitting with, because of what it actually means. For most people the worst moment is not the permanent one. It passes. They go on.

September is National Su***de Prevention Month, and this is the month to say the difficult part plainly. Research from CNA and First H.E.L.P. documented 1,287 law enforcement and corrections personnel lost to su***de between 2016 and 2022, an average of roughly 184 a year.

Those numbers are not here to frighten anyone. They are here because a hazard that goes unnamed does not stop being a hazard.

Members of this association carry this alongside everything else the job asks of them. We would rather talk about it early than talk about it after.

If you are carrying something heavy right now, the odds are better than the moment feels.

Send this post to one person you have not checked on in a while.

When a disaster hits, the phone network does not fail evenly. Voice calls go first.

Here is why. A phone call holds an open channel for as long as you talk. A text message is a tiny packet that queues, retries, and slips through gaps a call cannot use. That is why the FCC's emergency guidance says plainly that in many cases text messages will go through when your call may not.

The second half of that guidance is the part almost nobody follows. Pick a contact who lives outside your area and make sure everyone in your household knows to check in with that person. When something happens locally, local lines jam. Long distance often still works. Your out of area contact becomes the switchboard while the neighborhood ones are useless.

September is National Preparedness Month. Two things, ten minutes, no shopping required. Agree on the out of area contact, and make sure everyone knows to text rather than call.

Our members work the days these plans get tested. The households that made one are noticeably easier to help.

Comment below with the one preparedness step you have actually done. Not the one you keep meaning to do.

Happy 110th birthday to the Marine Forces Reserve.

On August 29, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Naval Appropriations Act, formally establishing the Marine Corps Reserve as World War I loomed and the country began preparing for the possibility of entering it.

Here is the growth curve: in April 1916, the Reserve consisted of 35 Marines. By the time Germany surrendered in November 1918, it had reached 6,467. Reserve Marines fought at Belleau Wood, Soissons, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne.

Today, Marine Forces Reserve is the largest command in the Marine Corps, with roughly 40,000 drilling Selected Reserve Marines across 184 Reserve Training Centers nationwide. They hold civilian careers and stay mission-ready at the same time.

Several members of this association do exactly that. Two commitments. One standard.

Semper Fidelis.

The most dangerous part of a child's school day happens before the first bell and after the last one.

NHTSA data shows more school-age pedestrians are killed between 6 and 8 in the morning and between 3 and 5 in the afternoon than during any other hours of the day. Those are exactly the windows when kids are walking to stops, cutting across parking lots, and heading home with headphones in.

A few things worth saying out loud to any child walking to school this year. Use the sidewalk whenever there is one. If there is not, walk facing traffic so you can see what is coming. Cross at corners and marked crossings, never between parked cars. And put the phone away for the length of the walk, because a driver who is not paying attention needs you to be the one who is.

Our members will be on those routes when the year starts. We are glad to be there.

Comment with the age of the kid in your life heading back to class.

There is no medal a service member volunteers for. The Purple Heart is the one nobody wants to earn.

It is awarded for being wounded or killed in action against an enemy of the United States. Not for valor. Not for leadership. For bearing the cost.

Established by George Washington on August 7, 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit and revived as the Purple Heart in 1932, it is the oldest military decoration still awarded in the United States. The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor estimates roughly 1.8 million have been given out, though records from the early years are incomplete. Approximately 430,000 were awarded posthumously.

Many members of this association are veterans. Some carry this decoration. Some lost friends who earned it the hardest way possible.

Today, and every day, we honor them.

Tag a Purple Heart recipient or a family member who carries that legacy in the comments.

236 years ago today, the Coast Guard started with ten ships and a tariff problem.

That is not a joke. When Congress authorized the Revenue Cutter Service on August 4, 1790, the mission was collecting duties and stopping smugglers. What it became is something else entirely.

In 1915, the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service to create the modern Coast Guard, and the mission expanded to include the work most people associate with it now. Search and rescue. Icebreaking. Drug interdiction. Port security. Environmental response. Eleven statutory missions in total, carried out by roughly 40,000 active duty members, 7,000 reservists, and thousands of auxiliary volunteers.

It is the smallest branch of the armed forces and the one most likely to be the reason someone makes it home.

Happy birthday to the U.S. Coast Guard from everyone at this association.

๐ŸŒŸ Christmas in July is here, and yes, that is actually a thing.

In 1933, Keystone Camp in Brevard, North Carolina decided their summer campers should not have to wait until December to feel Christmas spirit. They put up a tree, exchanged gifts, and the tradition started spreading. Almost 100 years later, it is officially observed on July 25.

To the members of this association who spend so much of the real Christmas season at work, today is a small reminder that the people who serve our community deserve to feel a little holiday spirit too.

Drop a ๐ŸŽ„ in the comments to wish someone in our profession a Merry Christmas in July. Let's get the spirit going.

Happy 250th birthday, America. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Two and a half centuries ago today, 56 men signed a document that asked more of this country than it had ever been asked to give. The Declaration of Independence has carried us through every conflict, every crisis, and every chapter that has come since. It is still doing the work it set out to do.

Today, our community celebrates the Semiquincentennial of the United States. The 250th anniversary of the bold idea that people have the right to govern their own lives.

The members of this association will spend today doing what they always do. Working shifts. Responding to calls. Making sure families across our community can gather safely.

Tag someone you are spending today with and tell them what you are most grateful for.

Happy Fourth of July from all of us.
