The city of El Reno has closed the Centre Theatre to the public until further notice because of nonfunctioning restrooms and sewer problems requiring replacement of the line serving the building.
Severely restricted sewer lines have caused unsafe conditions and left the restrooms nonfunctional. Without functioning restrooms, the building cannot safely remain open for public use.
The sewer line requires complete replacement, and the restrooms also need updates. The project will require planning, coordination, funding and construction. A reopening date has not been determined as of yet.
Along with the sewer replacement, the city is evaluating additional repairs, updates and renovation options to support the historic building’s long-term preservation and future use. That evaluation will help guide a comprehensive plan for the facility.
To help accommodate events previously scheduled at the theater, the city will offer other city-owned facilities at no charge, subject to availability, capacity, safety requirements and suitability. Affected event organizers are encouraged to contact city staff at 405-262-4070 to help with alternatives.
The city recognizes the Centre Theatre’s historical and cultural significance and remains committed to determining a path forward that protects public safety and supports the building’s future.
