DID YOU KNOW?

September 15th marks the kickoff of National Hispanic Heritage Month and El Paso 915 Day.

In recognition of El Paso’s rich cultura, heritage, and identity, City of El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson and Council celebrated with lowriders, artists, clubs, mariachis, matachines and an “El Paso Lowrider Day” proclamation.

On June 23, 2026, I brought forward an item directing City of El Paso City Manager and City Attorney to begin drafting a Community Agreement with Meta. That item received unanimous support from Council.

Today, City staff provided Council with an update on the progress made toward developing that agreement. While we are not yet where we need to be, I appreciate the meaningful progress that the City Manager, City staff, our community partners, and Meta have made through their continued discussions.

We are changing the trajectory of where this process began and moving it in a positive direction. The work underway represents a significant shift in how we approach accountability, transparency, and the expectations we set for partnerships that have a lasting impact on our community.

There is still important work ahead, and I look forward to the continued development of a Community Agreement that reflects the priorities of our community and delivers meaningful, long-term benefits for our residents.

I had the honor of participating in the 25th Anniversary 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at UTEP’s Sun Bowl Stadium. The experience was both deeply moving and humbling.

Every person participating in the 110-story climb payed a powerful tribute to first responders and all those we lost on September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years later, we carry their memory forward. May we never forget their courage, their sacrifice, and the unity our nation showed in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

Today, we pause to remember 9/11, to honor the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the courageous first responders, service members, and everyday Americans who answered in a moment of unimaginable tragedy.
