The most important word in EMS isn’t “EMERGENCY.”

It’s trust.

I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately.

Not because of one particular call, but because after enough years in this profession, you start to realize that trust is woven into almost everything we do.

Patients trust complete strangers to walk into some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

Partners trust each other to make decisions they may only have seconds to make.

Leaders ask crews to trust the decisions they make, even when those decisions aren’t popular.

None of that happens automatically.

Trust is built long before the difficult call ever comes in.

It’s built when you show up prepared.

When you admit you missed something instead of making excuses.

When you check on your partner after a rough call without making a big deal out of it.

When you treat the patient who calls 911 for the third time this week with the same respect you gave the critical trauma an hour earlier.

Those moments don’t usually get recognized.

There’s no award for them.

Most people will never know they happened.

But your crew notices.

Your patients notice.

Over time, those small moments become your reputation.

Years from now, your partner probably won’t remember every call you ran together.

They may not remember every skill you performed or every diagnosis you figured out.

But they’ll remember how it felt to work beside you.

Whether you stayed calm when things got hectic.

Whether you owned your mistakes.

Whether they could count on you when it mattered.

Clinical knowledge will always be essential.

But trust is what turns a group of providers into a team.

And in EMS, that’s something worth earning every single shift.

UPDATE: ESCAPED INMATE CAPTURED

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to report that the escaped inmate has been safely apprehended.

Ralph Miranda was taken into custody by Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies in Carrizozo a short time after escaping from the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Sheriff Michael Wood extends his sincere appreciation to all of the agencies that responded so quickly and worked together during this incident. Their rapid response and coordinated efforts resulted in the inmate’s swift capture, helping to ensure the safety of our community.

• Lincoln County Office of Emergency Services (OES)

This incident serves as an excellent example of the strong partnerships that exist among our local and state public safety agencies. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is grateful for the professionalism, teamwork, and dedication displayed by everyone involved.

The Lincoln County Detention Center is ran by a private corporation (CSG) and a full investigation will be underway.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is actively searching for an inmate who escaped from the Lincoln County Detention Center in Carrizozo within the last hour.

The Sheriff’s Office has requested assistance from the New Mexico State Police and the Carrizozo Police Department. Law enforcement officers are actively searching the area.

Please use caution. Do not approach the individual if you see him. Residents are encouraged to keep doors and vehicles locked, remain aware of their surroundings, and do not pick up hitchhikers until further notice.

If you see the individual or have information regarding his whereabouts, call 911 immediately.
