As of Wednesday, the El Dorado City Council had only one item of business on its agenda for today: the third reading of a proposed ordinance to close a portion of Jefferson Avenue.
Aldermen will consider final passages of the ordinance during a regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. today in the Council Chamber of City Hall.
The request to close Jefferson between Cedar and Locust came from El Dorado Festivals and Events, Inc., which is working on a plan to create a theater and arts district in that area of Union Square.
The multimillion-dollar project includes an expansion of the historic Rialto Theater across Jefferson.
A public hearing was held on the matter on April 20, and there were no comments in favor of or against the closure.
In 2012, the city council agreed to contribute more than $9 million of the one-cent, El Dorado Forward economic development tax toward the effort, for which estimated costs exceed $50 million.
