The 2026 wildfire season is underway, and the El Centro Fire Department is once again answering the call.

Early Thursday morning, at approximately 3:30 a.m., El Centro Fire Department personnel deployed as part of an Imperial County strike team to assist with the Bain Fire in Riverside County. The fire, which began on May 19, is currently estimated at approximately 1,500 acres and 67% contained.

Our personnel are proud to stand alongside our regional and statewide partners in protecting lives, property, and communities throughout California. We wish all responding crews a safe assignment and look forward to their safe return home.

Today, the El Centro Fire Department participated in a coordinated emergency preparedness exercise alongside El Centro Regional Medical Center, the Imperial County Public Health Department, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, and other partner agencies from across Imperial County.

The full-scale training exercise simulated a mass chemical exposure incident and helped strengthen coordination, communication, patient management, and emergency response preparedness among participating agencies.

The volunteer featured in the video is acting as a patient who has been exposed to a chemical as part of the simulated emergency scenario.

Exercises like these play an important role in ensuring emergency personnel, healthcare providers, and public safety agencies remain prepared to respond during real-world emergencies while continuing to protect the safety of the community.

Thank you to all participating agencies, volunteers, hospital staff, emergency responders, and organizers who helped make today’s training exercise possible.

Community members may notice emergency personnel, emergency vehicles, and training activity near El Centro Regional Medical Center as agencies conduct a simulated mass chemical exposure incident drill.

This is only a practice exercise. There is no real emergency and no threat to the public.

The full-scale training is designed to strengthen emergency response coordination, communication, and preparedness among local agencies in the event of a real incident. Today, we placed our new Rosenbauer Viper 109’ Quint into service at Station 3.

As part of a long-standing fire service tradition, crews “pushed in” the apparatus—a nod to the days when firefighters had to manually return horse-drawn engines to the bay. Today, it symbolizes teamwork, pride, and commitment to service.

This newest addition to the El Centro Fire Department fleet is now in service and responding out of Station 3.
