Earlier this week, the El Centro Police Department partnered with agents from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to conduct both Minor Decoy and Shoulder Tap operations within the City of El Centro aimed at reducing underage access to alcohol.

During the Minor Decoy operation, minors under the direct supervision of ABC agents attempted to purchase alcohol from local retail establishments. The operation resulted in clerks being cited for illegally selling alcohol to minors.

In a separate Shoulder Tap operation, ABC agents and El Centro Police officers arrested four suspects for furnishing alcohol to minors. Shoulder Tap operations target adults who purchase alcohol on behalf of individuals under the age of 21.

These enforcement operations are designed to improve public safety, prevent underage drinking, and reduce alcohol-related crashes involving young drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 25% of fatal crashes involve underage drinking.

The El Centro Police Department remains committed to working alongside our local and state partners to keep alcohol out of the hands of minors and ensure businesses remain compliant with California law.

Funding for these operations was provided through the ABC Alcohol Policing Partnership (APP) grant program.
