Gracias bomberos 🇲🇽 🇨🇱 🇨🇷 Twenty CAL FIRE instructors from across the Southern Region recently traveled to Ensenada to participate in the 2026 Binational Forestry Course, which united firefighters and first responders from the United States, Mexico, Chile, and Costa Rica.

CAL FIRE instructors delivered a variety of courses including S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior, S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior, S-234 Ignition Operations, and several Incident Command System (ICS) classes. The five day course brought together 208 students from 18 agencies from multiple countries, with many participants attending classes from early morning into the evening.

We are truly grateful for our hosts in Ensenada and all of the organizations and individuals who supported the logistics that made this year’s course such a meaningful and successful experience. Our partnership with the bomberos is something we truly value, and we are grateful for the continued opportunity to learn from and work alongside them!

CAL FIRE investigators have determined the cause of the Main 2 Fire in the community of Ramona to be a battery. The fire was quickly stopped at 7 acres on the afternoon of Monday, June 1st.

Investigators identified evidence of a 20 volt cordless tool battery that experienced thermal runaway, resulting in multiple ignitions. It is believed the battery fell from a passenger vehicle, and the damage it sustained caused it to break apart and ignite roadside vegetation.

This incident is a reminder to always properly secure your load when driving. Loose items in or on vehicles can fall into roadways and create serious fire and safety hazards, especially in dry vegetation areas where ignition can happen quickly.

The County has officially broken ground on a new fire station in Jacumba, marking an important step forward in strengthening emergency services for this rural community. San Diego County Fire Protection District and CAL FIRE recognize this project as a key investment in improving response capabilities in the region.

Station 43 Jacumba will be a 7,100 square foot facility designed to support fire and medical crews serving the community, surrounding backcountry areas, and travelers along Interstate 8 and Old Highway 80. Once completed, the new station is expected to open in 2027 and will provide a modern base of operations for firefighters serving the region.

Sustainability is a central focus of the project, with the station designed to meet LEED Gold standards and achieve Zero Net Energy performance. This means the facility will be built to produce as much energy as it consumes each year, supporting long term efficiency and environmental responsibility.

We extend our appreciation to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, Supervisor Joel Anderson, and the San Diego County Department of General Services for their continued dedication to strengthening and improving emergency services across San Diego County.

Feline extraction specialists. 🐈‍⬛ If you’ve ever wondered whether firefighters really rescue cats from trees, incident records indicate the answer is yes.

Recently, firefighters from Station 44 Pine Valley responded to assist a highly self assured black cat that had successfully achieved its objective of reaching the top of a tree.

After completing the ascent with confidence, the cat delegated all descent operations to emergency personnel, was safely returned to its owner, and maintained that everything had gone according to plan
