April 1, 2026: Weather Update from the NOAA US National Weather Service Billings Montana:
DETAILS
Unsettled Weather Continues into Wednesday
Scattered snow and rain showers will continue to impact portions of the region into Wednesday.
An additional trace to several inches of snow are possible over portions of south-central Montana this evening into Wednesday. Generally light accumulation across the rest of the plains.
There is a slight chance of light freezing rain tonight into Wednesday morning over southern Montana.
Up to a glaze of ice is possible on roadways before the sun comes up.

Potentially Impactful Winter Weather System Thursday into Friday
A weather system is expected to bring winter weather back to much of the region Thursday into Friday.
Exact details regarding snowfall and wind remain uncertain due to some uncertainty in the track of the system. A track through southern Montana would be drier and less organized, while a track through northern Wyoming would be wetter and more impactful. Currently, models are trending towards the latter, favoring a potentially more impactful weather system.
Precipitation looks to start as scattered rain during the day Thursday before transitioning over to widespread
snow Thursday evening into Friday.
A few weak thunderstorms are possible during the day Thursday, but no strong thunderstorms are expected.

The best chance of seeing moderate to heavy snow is currently over south-eastern Montana and north-central Wyoming where the chance of seeing 6 or more inches is 25 to 50 percent.

Gusty northerly winds will likely cause areas of blowing snow late Thursday into Friday.
While the exact placement of the strongest gusts remains uncertaint, widespread gusts in the 20s to 40s mph look to be common.

March 12, 2026: (9:50 am) This is the latest update from the US National Weather Service Billings Montana

KEY POINTS:

High Wind event unfolding as expected
Areas of blowing dust possible in east
Quickly transition to snow tonight
Potential snow amounts increasing

The high wind event across the area is unfolding as expected. Peak gusts 70 to near 80 mph have already been reported from Livingston to Harlowton, with a gust to 72 mph at Ingomar in Northern Rosebud County.

Latest data indicates winds will mix down across much of lower elevations between 9 am and noon today. Gusts from 55 to 75 mph are expected to be widespread, but stronger gusts are still possible. The strong gusts may last over a few hours to midafternoon before backing off. Strongest gusts in eastern Montana from Forsyth to Baker and Ekalaka may occur this afternoon. One impact we have not advertised much is blowing dust. We have had public reports of this already, mainly Hysham to Forsyth (see image below) . This could reduce visibility in local stretches below one mile.

We transition to snow this evening for a long duration event through Saturday night. Potential snow amounts continue to increase, but accumulation on roads is uncertain due to temperatures only hovering in lower to mid 30s at first. More efficient accumulation is likely Friday night and Saturday.

WHAT...West winds with gusts of 50 to 70 mph possible. Locally
higher gusts are possible.

* WHERE..Portions of central, south central, and southeast Montana.

* WHEN...From 6 AM to 9 PM MDT Thursday.

* IMPACTS...Extreme wind gusts could blow down trees and power lines. Power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult for high
profile vehicles. Any sparked fires in dry grasses will spread rapidly.

I will post updates as they are received. Be safe.
