Good morning! Today’s picture takes us to Mason Township.

This is from a newspaper clipping about the 50th anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Bushue. Since it does not mention his wife’s name, I looked it up for further information. This is a picture of Bernard E. and Theresia J. “Tracy” (Verdeyen) Bushue. Bernard was born August 7, 1892 and died on October 22, 1970. His wife, Theresia “Tracy” was born January 26, 1896 and died December 24, 1971. Both are buried at St. Anne’s Cemetery near Edgewood, Illinois.

Please share with us if you know this couple or any of their children or descendants. I know quite a few of the descendants. You will still find the name Bushue prominent in Effingham County, Illinois. This clipping is from the Effingham Daily News on August 14, 1963.

“Bernard Bushue and Wife Mark 50th Wedding Date”

“Mason – A basket dinner in observance of the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Bushue of near Mason was held at the home of their son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Bushue on Sunday, August 4.”

“Ten of the couple’s eleven children were present for the day. A daughter, Mrs. Arthur Spirakes and family of Kaawaa, Hawaii was unable to attend. One son, Paul, died in infancy and another son, Emery, was killed during World War II.”

“Mr. and Mrs. Bushue were married in 1913 at St. Aloysius church, Bishop Creek, with Lee S. Bushue and Mrs. Katherine Pike as witnesses. They have lived in the Mason area during the past 50 years.”

Children of the couple attending were Mr. and Mrs. Glen Boone and family, Edgewood; Mr. and Mrs. Bud Driskell and family, Mattoon’ Mrs. James King and son, Alton; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Bushue and family, Mason; Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Willenborg and family, Teutopolis; Mr. and Mrs. Lester Bushue, Macomb; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Bushue and family, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Bushue and family, Mason; Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Bushue and son, Batavia; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kramer and family, Farina.”

“Approximately 350 persons attended the celebration.”

Good morning! Today’s picture takes us to Lucas Township.

This is Richeson School from the 1948-1949 school year. Richeson was school #75 in Section 3 of Lucas Township. The building they are standing in front of was built around 1918 and was considered modern and a big improvement over the previous building. This building was moved to Elliottstown where it was combined with some other schools. I believe it is currently used for housing.

Take a look at the names and faces. Please share with us if you recognize any of them or perhaps you attended school here. Most of these last names can still be found in Effingham County.

Wherever you may be, I wish you a wonderful day!

The Effingham County Genealogical and Historical Society, (ECGHS), has a story to tell.

Beginning in April 1980, Effingham County Genealogical Society, (ECGS) had as its mission to bring together people interested in genealogy and to discover, collect, and preserve the history of the people who contributed to establishing Effingham County.

ECGS soon grew to have over 200 members. Meetings were monthly with the focus to help people learn how to trace their family lineage, and plan projects to raise funds on behalf of the society. These funds were used primarily to publish census, marriage, and land records, along with two 300‐page volumes on the St. Anthony Hospital Fire of 1949, and a 300‐page book on the Effingham County Poor Farm.

Members of ECGS receive four quarterlies, “Crossroad Trails”, per year. These quarterlies are filled with stories from the Effingham area. Here are a few examples:

*Griffin Tipsword, the earliest settler in the county

*Major Henry Hanson Caldwell, U.S. Army world traveler, WW2, son of Dr. Bert Wilmer Caldwell, a Colonel in the United States Military Medical Section WW1

*Johnson Funeral Home Records, 1896‐1941

*Sundown Towns, 1920‐1940

*Effingham County Pioneer Certificates, in the area before 1880

*Orphan trains

*United States Military

*Dr. James Newton Matthews

*Cemetery Inscriptions

In 1998, Effingham Regional Historical Society, (ERHS) dating back to 1959, and Effingham County Genealogical Society, (ECGS) merged with the same plan to preserve genealogical and historical records for future generations.

The ECGHS is located in the William W. and Jane B. Austin room of the Effingham Public Library, 200 N. Third Street, Effingham, IL and is open during regular Library hours.

If you’re interested in tracing your family tree, learning the history of Effingham County and surrounding areas, volunteers are available to assist you with research on most days, 10:00 a.m. to noon; or contact Eleanor Bounds, cell 816‐262‐5376 or
[email protected].

ECGHS passed the 42‐year milestone in April 2022. While membership has declined over the years, due mostly to the demise of faithful members, we continue to publish our quarterly, Crossroad Trails and help with research when requested.

Anyone interested in becoming a member may do so by sending a check or money order for $25.00 to:
ECGHS

Effingham, IL 62401.

*Volunteers are always welcome*
