To attract a great diversity of wild bees a landscape should feature at least 12-20 species of flowing plants, and have at least 3 species of blooming plants at a given time! 🐝🦋🌸

Conservation easement monitoring season is in full swing! 🌿

Today, GMCG staff and summer intern Anna visited an agricultural conservation easement in Albany to complete annual stewardship monitoring. This beautiful conserved landscape was bursting with life—native wildflowers blanketed the hay fields, the forest brook ran swiftly with June rain, and the grasses towered nearly four feet tall beside Anna.

Accompanied by Outreach Coordinator Moselle Spiller, Anna enjoyed a fantastic day ensuring this special landscape continues to be stewarded with the health and integrity of the land in mind. Successful monitoring helps protect the conservation values that make places like this so special for generations to come.

Special thanks to Wendy Scribner from UNH Cooperative Extension who helped kick off Pollinator Week this week with an excellent program about how to support and create pollinator habitat! Don't miss this fun and informative program as Wendy will be back on Wednesday afternoon at 1pm to do it again! Green Mountain Conservation Group’s Blue Heron House, located at 236 Huntress Bridge Road in Effingham, is open to the public and features a delightful riverside trail along the beautiful Ossipee River.

The Blue Heron Trail loops around a scenic vernal pool, and visitors can continue their adventure along the Artemis Trail to explore the neighboring Huntress property.

Whether you’re looking for a quiet walk, hoping to spot wildlife, or simply wanting to connect with nature, we hope you’ll make time to visit us this summer and learn more about our mission to protect the lakes, streams, rivers, and forests of the Ossipee watershed.

This hummingbird clearwing moth was busy visiting June wildflowers in Effingham this afternoon. Pollinators come in all shapes and sizes—and they all play an important role in keeping our ecosystems healthy!

You may not think of road salt when you see these ducks swimming in a temporary drainage pool along a major state roadway in early summer. After lots of spring rainfall, this temporary pool by the roadside has grown to host a wide variety of native species including amphibians and invertebrates that find these temporary ponds to feed, breed, and live. This scene underscores the importance of using less road salt in the winter because salt doesn’t disappear in the summer time, in fact it becomes more concentrated as rain washes it down from the roadways.
