Wow! What a great Saturday at The Land of Goshen Community Market! We thank everyone who stopped to say hello and especially to those who took our CPR challenge!
We had so many people talk to us about this life-saving technique and quite a few of you successfully completed our eight-minute challenge administering compressions-only CPR to our training manikins. Why eight minutes? That's the average response time from the time a 911 call is placed for a cardiac situation to the arrival of first responders.
Thanks to our intrepid Saturday morning fire/EMT crew for sharing their knowledge and skills, and a BIG thanks to The Land of Goshen Community Market for welcoming us.
If you didn't get a chance to say hello this Saturday, you've got two more chances. We're collaborating with the Edwardsville-YMCA for three events this month to talk about ways you can be prepared to respond to a medical emergency on the go, at your home or in or near the water.
We'll be at the Meyer YMCA on Goshen Road this Friday, June 26, for Water Safety Day. It runs from 2-7 p.m. and is a fun, free annual YMCA event to promote safety awareness when you are swimming or near a pool.
Then, on Saturday, June 27, we'll be back at The Land of Goshen Community Market in City Park, 101 S. Buchanan, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Do you know how to do CPR? This life-saving technique is not hard to learn. Let us show you how! Visit us on Saturday, June 20 and June 27, at The Land of Goshen Community Market in City Park, 101 S. Buchanan. We’ll be there from 8 a.m. to noon. Then, on Friday, June 26, we’ll be at the Edwardsville-YMCA for their Water Safety Day at the Meyer YMCA location on Goshen Road! That fantastic event takes place from 2–7 p.m.

HEADS-UP: Please use caution; some traffic signals are not operating due to a power outage affecting some areas.

Due to a power outage in the southeastern section of town (Troy Rd area) some traffic signals are dark. Remember a dark intersection should be treated as a 4 way stop. Ameren is working to restore power, use caution and have patience on the roadways.

It's just a few more days until summer is officially here, and that means increased chances of excessive heat, plus storms and other types of severe weather are possible. (Forecasts from the past week have included storms AND some high temps.)

Goodbyes are bittersweet, especially when a dedicated and decorated veteran of 30 years -- who has meant so much to the department and the community -- hangs up the helmet, capping a stellar career. The Edwardsville Fire Department, family, friends and City colleagues paid tribute to Deputy Chief Bob Morgan, whose final day on the job before retiring was Friday, June 12. He was sworn in as a firefighter on May 30, 1996, serving with distinction and rising steadily in the ranks: promoted to lieutenant in 2008, to captain in 2009, to assistant fire chief and fire marshal in 2023, and deputy chief and fire marshal in 2024.
His colleagues took the opportunity to honor him with the Exceptional Service Award, given to individuals who distinguish themselves, often going above and beyond the expectations of their position. Assistant Chief Rodney Hall presented the award to Deputy Chief Morgan, sharing remarks prepared by Capt. Ed Burnley: “Whether developing innovative prevention programs, mentoring peers or advocating for safer building practices, Deputy Chief Morgan consistently embodies the highest ideals of the fire service, making Edwardsville and surrounding communities a safer place to live, work and visit. As he prepares to conclude his 30-year career, his departure will be a profound loss not only to the City of Edwardsville but to the fire service at large.”
Deputy Chief Morgan shared his appreciation for a fulfilling career, great colleagues and support from the department and City officials.
“This has always been more than a job; it’s been a way of life, a passion, at least for me -- a noble profession where we can and do make a difference in people’s lives,” he said.
To his newer colleagues, he advised having fun, knowing when to be serious and treating everyone with respect and compassion.
“I loved the fire service and I’ve enjoyed my career here and know the department is in very good hands. I look forward to the next phase of my life with my awesome wife and hope to keep in touch with everybody here. Be good, be safe and I’ll miss you and the job.”
(We feel the same way: Be good, be safe and we’ll definitely miss you, Deputy Chief Morgan. Enjoy your retirement and lots of fishing!)

What's the job like for someone new to the fire service? Well, there's training, training and more training! (That applies to veteran firefighters, too, of course!)
So, when the opportunity arose this week to help set up a helicopter landing zone as part of the Edwardsville Police Department Youth Academy, we took it as an opportunity for Assistant Chief Rodney Hall and a few others to go over the procedures and precautions with several of our newest staff members.
Thanks to ARCH Air Medical Service-Granite City Base for participating -- it was a terrific experience for our newest crew members and for the Youth Academy campers, too! We also loved being able to show off our own gear and equipment with the Youth Academy students.
