What's going on in Shakespeare’s Garden? You may have noticed that over the last year there has been on-going work happening in this area.

This beautiful outdoor space was designed by Doug Conley ( SIUE Gardens first Director) in 2010. He developed the Shakespeare’s Garden with Master Gardener/Master Naturalist volunteers and English Department Faculty.

In 2025, the MG/MN volunteers identified, planned and started work to update and restore this Garden area to it's original beauty.

The project began with planning and designing how to update this formal garden area, with Doug Conley's original design as our guide. Inventory was taken of all of the plants in the garden, identifying and moving plants that had outgrown the individual small symmetrical garden beds. Old gravel, dirt, plant material was removed to recreate a defined, symmetrical center for the garden.
The armillary was removed for repairs and cleaning. Large granite stone were cut and placed in the center to make a strong, attractive base for the armillary, The armillary was returned to it's original spot, as the focal point.
These photos are of two volunteers installing edging and putting in new gravel.

The volunteers will continue restoring this area by moving plants, weeding, edging and mulching garden beds that surround this beautiful newly restored center!

We hope you enjoy!
