We spent yesterday at the 51st annual Clearwater Festival in Asbury Park sharing information about what’s happening in Keyport and collecting signatures for our petition to the EPA. Thank you to nj_friends_of_clearwater and Clean Ocean Action for a great event celebrating the power communities have to protect our environment.

The must watch documentary American Doctor follows doctors Mark Perlmutter who is Jewish, Thaer Ahmad who is Palestinian, and Feroze Sidhwa who is non religious as they attempt to return to Gaza during the ceasefire in early 2025. I strongly encourage everyone to come and see this film. It is only showing in Bernardsville Cinema until next Wednesday Sept 9th. A July 24th study by scientists at Yale’s School of Public Health and Maryland University found that Medicare for All would reduce the annual cost of healthcare in the US from $5.2 trillion to $4.2 trillion, saving $1 trillion dollars per year while saving 114,000 lives per year. Medicare for All is supported by 78% of Democrats and 47% of Republicans even after they are informed it would eliminate private health insurance, according to a November 2025 survey from Data for Progress.

Representative Hakeem Jeffries not supporting Medicare for All is out of touch with the Democratic base. His position helps build the case that he should not be voted Speaker of the House after the Democrats likely win back Congress in November.

UPDATE: On 8/11, NJDEP announced that they’ll be testing outside of the site in neighborhoods in Keyport and Union Beach. We encourage folks to continue to reach out to Governor Sherrill’s office as we await these results. Continued public engagement will help ensure this investigation remains a priority.

Sayreville residents packed the council chambers last week to speak out against data centers in their town.

The council ultimately approved an 18-month moratorium, and a motion for a permanent ban failed after Mayor O’Brien cast the tie-breaking vote against it.

Councilmembers Rios, Novak, and Blemur all voted in favor of a permanent ban.

After months of public pressure, new testing is finally being conducted at the Aeromarine site in Keyport. The community awaits the results and any actions that may follow.

Sayreville’s town council introduced an 18-month moratorium at their last meeting, but state law caps it at 6 months, so it wouldn’t be fully enforceable as written. Either way, the community in Sayreville deserves permanent protection, not a temporary delay.

Sayreville is already associated with multiple superfund sites and a history of industrial pollution. DuPont and Hercules contaminated 2,400 acres of groundwater in with PFAs. Now the town would be opening itself up to putting one of the most water-intensive industrial operations on the planet on that same land, which will strain our electric grid, threaten our water supply, and put our health at risk.

This won’t just affect , but the surrounding townships as well. Join us at Sayreville’s Town Council meeting July 20 to tell the council that we need a permanent ban.


EDIT: Based on our understanding of the municipal land use law, a moratorium is only allowed in cases of imminent health risk, and even in those cases, the limit is 6 months.
