Happy 157th Birthday to Edison's first patent, the Electric Vote Recorder! This invention would have made recording legislative bodies votes easy, accurate, and efficient. However, Edison's vote recorder was never used. Upon being shown the invention, the chairman of the congress committee was unimpressed and told him that "if there is any invention on earth that we don't want down here, that is it." The slow pace of roll call voting in Congress and other legislatures enabled members to filibuster legislation or convince others to change their votes.

Classified as a dinner plate dahlia, the Thomas Edison Dahlia’s name was approved by the inventor in 1929 and is one of the oldest dahlias still in commercial production! Edison’s wife, Mina Miller Edison, particularly enjoyed purple flowers and loved to garden, leading Edison to name this dahlia. Visit us tomorrow to learn more about Edison and his history! Memorial Day is a day meant to honor the service men and women of our nation who have passed. The TECMP wanted to recognize this date with a quote from Thomas Edison himself that highlights the day's importance: "We are proud of the North Americans who risked their lives for the liberty of the world."

This quote is from Edison's speech titled 'Let Us Not Forget: A Message To The American People,' which you are hearing in this post. This speech is not only incredibly touching in its goal of preserving the legacy of all Allied soldiers who lost their lives in World War I, but it is also the only time Thomas Edison's voice made it into the record catalogue.

Thank you to all of our service members who have made 'American' mean courage, generosity, self-restraint and modesty.
