💜💛 OCTOBER IS NATIONAL PRINCIPALS MONTH! 💛💜

🎉 WEEK 4: FUN FACT FRIDAY! 🎉

We're continuing our National Principals Month celebration, and today we're heading back to the COLLEGE YEARS with another familiar face from Edgewood ISD! 🎓📸

🎓 MR. JEFF MASON, PK–8 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL! 💜

Before he was helping lead our Bulldogs, Mr. Mason was a Bearkat at Sam Houston State University! 🐾

He earned his bachelor's degree in Kinesiology and Health, followed by a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction. He later continued his educational journey at Lamar University, where he earned his Principal Certification!

💡 BUT HERE'S THE REAL FUN FACT!

Mr. Mason says some of the most valuable lessons he learned in college didn't come from a textbook! 📚

Between attending classes and working a job, he learned pretty quickly how to juggle responsibilities, stay organized, and make every minute count!

⏰ Turns out those college lessons in time management and responsibility were pretty good preparation for life as a school administrator! 😉

📸 And how about that college throwback picture?! We LOVE getting a glimpse of our administrators before they were leading the halls of Edgewood ISD!

💜💛 College isn't just about earning a degree. Sometimes the lessons you learn outside the classroom are the ones that stick with you the longest!

💜💛 OCTOBER IS NATIONAL PRINCIPALS MONTH! 💛💜

🎉 WEEK 4: FUN FACT FRIDAY! 🎉

We're continuing our celebration of National Principals Month, and this week's trip down memory lane is giving us a whole new look at the people who lead our campuses! 🎓📸

🎓 MRS. EMILY FULWOOD, EDGEWOOD PK–5 PRINCIPAL! 💜

Did you know Mrs. Fulwood graduated cm laude at just 19 years old from the University of Texas at Dallas? 🤯🎓 Talk about getting an early start!

And she didn't stop there! She went on to earn TWO master's degrees, one in Reading and Literacy and another in Educational Administration, and even completed doctoral coursework in Clinical Neuropsychology! 📚

But college wasn't ALL about hitting the books!

🏈🏀 Mrs. Fulwood loved spending her weekends in College Station cheering on the Aggies, enjoying time with friends and family, and soaking up the college-town atmosphere. In fact, she loved the area so much that she began her teaching career in College Station ISD!

💜💛 FUN FACT: Mrs. Fulwood may have attended UT Dallas, but College Station became her second home thanks to lifelong friendships, football weekends, and some unforgettable memories!

As we wrap up Digital Citizenship Week, Edgewood ISD is highlighting the final game in our series of 5 popular online games that parents need to know about.

And we're ending with one that deserves some SERIOUS parental attention!

🚨 COMING IN AT #5 IS GRAND THEFT AUTO V! 🚨

Grand Theft Auto V, commonly known as GTA V, is an open-world action-adventure game where players explore a fictional city, complete missions, and interact with other players through GTA Online.

While the game is extremely popular, parents need to understand something VERY important:

🔞 GTA V IS RATED M FOR MATURE (AGES 17+) BY THE ESRB!
This game contains mature content, including violence, strong language, sexual content, and references to drugs and alcohol. It is NOT designed for young children.

🚨 WHAT SHOULD PARENTS WATCH FOR?

🔞 Mature & Graphic Content: GTA V includes intense violence, blood and gore, criminal activities, strong language, nudity, sexual content, and drug and alcohol use. Parents should understand exactly what their children may be seeing and experiencing.

🎧 Online Interactions With Strangers: GTA Online allows players to interact with people they don't know in real life. Some individuals may attempt to build trust, ask personal questions, or encourage conversations outside the game.

💬 Inappropriate Communication: Online interactions may expose players to offensive language, harassment, bullying, or inappropriate conversations through voice chat, text, or other communication features.

😡 Cyberbullying & Harassment: Players may encounter threats, intimidation, inappropriate comments, or repeated harassment from other players.

💳 In-Game Purchases: GTA Online offers Shark Cards, which allow players to purchase in-game currency using real money. Children may not fully understand how quickly these purchases can add up!

🔐 Scams & Account Theft: Fake giveaways, suspicious links, and offers of free in-game money can be used to trick players into sharing account information.

📱 Moving Conversations Outside the Game: Players may be encouraged to communicate through Discord, Snapchat, or other platforms where parents have less visibility.

⏰ Excessive Screen Time: With so much to explore and do, players can spend hours gaming, potentially affecting sleep, schoolwork, and other responsibilities.

🚩 RED FLAGS PARENTS SHOULD WATCH FOR:
🔴 Sudden changes in mood or behavior after gaming.
🔴 Talking about online friends they have never met in person.
🔴 Using unfamiliar apps to communicate with people from the game.
🔴 Unexplained purchases or charges.
🔴 Exposure to inappropriate or disturbing content.
🔴 Spending excessive amounts of time playing.
🔴 Becoming secretive about online activities.

🔒 PARENT SAFETY TIPS:
✅ Check the ESRB rating BEFORE allowing your child to play a game.
✅ Keep GTA V off devices used by younger children.
✅ Use console or PC parental controls to manage access, purchases, and playtime.
✅ Disable or limit online communication when appropriate.
✅ Discuss the difference between video game content and acceptable real-world behavior.
✅ Remind children NEVER to share personal information with online players.
✅ Monitor online interactions and changes in behavior.
✅ Encourage children to report inappropriate interactions to a trusted adult.

Each of these games offers a different experience, and each comes with its own considerations for parents.

Our goal throughout this week has NEVER been to tell families that all video games are bad. Gaming can encourage creativity, teamwork, problem-solving, and friendships.

But not every game is appropriate for every age, and not every online interaction is safe.

💜 PARENTS, YOU ARE YOUR CHILD'S FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE IN THE DIGITAL WORLD! 💛

Know what they're playing. Know who they're talking to. Understand the ratings. Explore parental controls. And most importantly, KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOING!

Do you know the age ratings of the games your children are playing? Have you ever sat down and played one of their favorite games WITH them?

As we continue Digital Citizenship Week, Edgewood ISD is highlighting 5 popular online games that parents should pay close attention to.

Coming in at #4 is AMONG US! 🚀👾

Among Us is a popular multiplayer game where players work together aboard a spaceship to complete tasks while trying to figure out who the secret Impostor is! While the game can encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking, there are also potential risks parents need to understand.

🚨 WHAT SHOULD PARENTS WATCH FOR?

👥 Public Lobbies & Strangers: Children can join public games with people they don't know in real life. Not everyone they encounter online has good intentions.

💬 Inappropriate Chat & Usernames: Depending on the game's communication settings, players may encounter inappropriate language, personal questions, or usernames that aren't suitable for younger audiences.

📱 Moving Conversations to Other Apps: Some players may encourage children to continue conversations on Discord, Snapchat, TikTok, or other messaging platforms where parents may have less visibility.

😢 Cyberbullying & Exclusion: Players may experience name-calling, hurtful comments, or being intentionally excluded from games.

🎭 Deception & Trust Issues: Among Us is built around identifying an Impostor through deception and discussion. While this is part of the game's fun, it can sometimes lead to arguments, frustration, or hurt feelings.

✅ Talk regularly with your child about who they're playing with and what they're experiencing.

As we continue Digital Citizenship Week, Edgewood ISD is highlighting 5 popular online games that research suggests parents should pay close attention to.

Coming in at #3 is MINECRAFT! ⛏️🟩

Minecraft is one of the most popular games among children of all ages! While it encourages creativity, imagination, teamwork, and problem-solving, parents may not realize that Minecraft can also connect their children with complete strangers through multiplayer servers and online communities.

And while building a virtual world can be fun, there are some very REAL risks parents need to understand!

🚨 WHAT SHOULD PARENTS WATCH FOR?

🎧 Communication with Strangers: Minecraft allows players to interact with others through multiplayer servers and Realms. Children may communicate with people they have never met, including adults pretending to be other children.

🚩 Online Predators and Grooming: Some individuals may attempt to gain a child's trust through gaming conversations and encourage them to communicate on other apps or platforms where parental protections may be limited.

💬 Cyberbullying and Griefing: Players may experience harassment, hurtful comments, exclusion, or intentional destruction of things they have worked hard to build.

⚠️ Inappropriate Content: Some player-created worlds, servers, and modifications may expose children to inappropriate language, violence, or content that isn't suitable for their age.

💳 In-Game Purchases and Scams: Minecraft's Minecoins can be used to purchase additional content. Children may also encounter scams, suspicious links, or individuals attempting to steal account information.

🔒 Sharing Personal Information: Children may unknowingly share their real names, locations, school information, or other personal details while chatting with online players.

⏰ Excessive Screen Time: Minecraft's endless possibilities can make it difficult for children to stop playing, potentially interfering with sleep, homework, and other responsibilities.

💡 WHAT CAN PARENTS DO?

✅ Review Minecraft's parental controls through your child's Microsoft/Xbox family account.
✅ Know whether your child is playing alone, with friends, or on public multiplayer servers.
✅ Restrict communication with strangers and review multiplayer permissions.
✅ Monitor in-game purchases and require permission before spending money.
✅ Talk to your child about never sharing personal information with online players.
✅ Encourage your child to report and block anyone who makes them uncomfortable.
✅ Establish healthy gaming time limits.

💜💛 OUR GOAL ISN'T TO STOP KIDS FROM GAMING. IT'S TO HELP THEM GAME SAFELY!

Parents, here's something to think about: Just because your child is building houses, exploring caves, or collecting diamonds doesn't necessarily mean they're playing alone!

Take a few minutes to ask your child who they're playing Minecraft with, what servers they're joining, and whether they've ever been asked to communicate with someone outside the game.

The most important safety feature your child has isn't found in the game settings. It's an involved parent who knows what's happening in their digital world! 💜
