At tonight’s regular City Council Meeting, Chief DeSchryver presented the agency’s “Award for Administrative Excellence.” This year’s recipient is Accreditation Manager Cpl. Adam LaFan for his outstanding efforts in maintaining our accreditation, resulting in our “Excelsior” reaccreditation.

The Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) Excelsior recognition is the highest and most prestigious honor awarded to Florida criminal justice agencies, highlighting a long-term commitment to professional excellence.

It is earned by achieving accreditation in at least five consecutive cycles, demonstrating exceptional dedication to high standards, transparency, and consistency in public safety services.

Congratulations to Cpl. LaFan on this well-deserved recognition. We are grateful for your dedication and dedication to making our agency better for everyone.

For the next 30 days, our officers will wear their mourning band across their badges. This symbol of unity is to honor the life and legacy of Edgewood Council President Pro-Tem Chris Rader. He will be forever remembered for his dedication to our City.

The members of our agency share the sentiment of The Edgewood District. Chris was a tremendous asset to our City. He was a staunch supporter of the Edgewood Central District's long-term vision. But nobody has felt this loss more than his wife, child, and family. Please keep them in your hearts and hold them close. Chris, thank you for your service. Godspeed. 💙💔❤️‍🩹

To our Edgewood neighbors and friends, our hearts are heavy as we share the passing of Councilmember Chris Rader, who was, above all else, a devoted husband and father. While we knew him as a leader, he was first a "safe place" for his family, carrying them through life’s storms with love. To Jennifer and Levi, our community offers our deepest empathy; we grieve with you for the man who was your home, and we promise that the warmth and safety he provided you will always be remembered by the City he served.

Chris was a staunch advocate of his community and, in particular, of the long-term vision for the Edgewood Central District, consistently choosing principle over the easy path to ensure a vibrant future for all of us. He championed high standards to preserve the integrity of our goals, advocating for a modernized and appealing City with the heart of a true community.

Chris’s presence on the Council and in our lives will be profoundly missed, and his absence leaves a void that will be felt by his family, colleagues, and neighbors. We are immensely thankful for the time we shared with him and for the opportunity to have been touched by his life, his remarkable talent, and his technical expertise. His legacy of excellence and his dedication to our city have left an indelible mark on our hearts, and we are better for having known him.

As Chief of the Edgewood Police Department, I proudly name Officer Miguel Aponte as our 2025 Officer of the Year. In just three years, he has shown exceptional performance, dedication, and proactive policing.

He leads in DUI arrests, volunteers as a DUI instructor, and has improved his report writing significantly. Officer Aponte is proactive in traffic enforcement, reliable in covering shifts, and maintains expert marksmanship.

He earned the "Night Stalker Award" for apprehending suspects during a burglary, exemplifying vigilance. His efforts and commitment make him a worthy recipient.

He will be honored at the February 17 City Council Meeting at 6:30 p.m. The public and agency members are invited to attend.

Respectfully,

Dean A. DeSchryver
Chief of Police
