I am pleased to introduce Dana Wilde, MLIS, to Edgefield County. Dana started September 29th as Edgefield County Archivist. She comes to us with experience working with numerous museums and historical societies.

Edgefield County (established 1785) has one of the oldest and most complete collections of historical county records in South Carolina. One of the reasons for this is that the county has never suffered a courthouse fire and General Sherman did not pass through this area during the War Between the States. The county has an Archives Department that is dedicated solely to the housing and protection of these records. The purpose of the Edgefield County Archives is to collect, preserve, and make available the permanently valuable official records(Prior to 1913) of the county in accordance with the County Council Resolution of 00-01-243 of June 13th 2001. The facility includes a research room and a state-of-the-art 1,668 square ft. records vault (2nd Best in the State of SC) that is fire proof and climate-controlled.

I just wanted Edgefield County citizens to be aware....We are unable at this time to lower our US and State Flags to half-mast or otherwise. The cable is off track at the top of the pole and is completely stuck. As soon as the Town of Edgefield is able to assist us with their snork-lift, we will remedy the situation. Thank you for your understanding. And as always, thank you to the Town of Edgefield for their past and future assistance.

Bringing a little more history to the courthouse. The display case is an 1800’s general store case. The pottery (my personal collection) is all from Edgefield County 1800’s pottery with descriptions of their history. Books align the top shelf about pottery, court history, and a photo of Senator Strom Thurmond and his late wife voting in Edgefield County in the 50’s. On top of the case to the left is the Jury Ballot Box used in the 1800’s and to the right is the Clerk’s Desk that was used in the 1800’s.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT - JURY DUTY SCAM

There is a Jury Duty SCAM that is frequently used to scare citizens. With this scam, you receive a phone call from a person claiming to be with the County Sheriff, local Police Department, or the Federal Court system, telling you that you did not show up for Jury Duty and warrants have been issued for your arrest...BUT you can be excused by going to a CVS, Wal-Mart, etc and buying monetary cards and giving them the codes. THIS IS A SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The court system will only call you...IF...you received a jury summons in the mail AND mailed it in AND forgot to report to court on the date summoned. We will never threaten you or request money.

Please share this with friends that are elderly, not tech savvy, etc that may be easily influenced by these scammers.
