In the month of August, the Town of Eden Police Department handled 1,001 calls for service, made 15 arrests, 7 of which were DWI/DWAI related, and issued 172 traffic summonses. The following is a brief summary of what the Eden Police Department responded to this past month:

8/3 – Patrol observed a vehicle with an expired inspection sticker and initiated a traffic stop on North Main Street. The 49-year-old male driver was then found to have a suspended license. A search of the vehicle yielded suspected crack co***ne, pipes and other drug paraphernalia, prescription medications, and digital scales with suspected drug residue. Both occupants of the vehicle were charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal use of drug paraphernalia. The evidence collected was submitted to the Central Police Services Lab for analysis. This arrest is part of our ongoing efforts to address quality of life issues that have been brought to our attention from the Sunset Drive community.
8/6 – A 39-year-old male from North Collins was arrested following a traffic stop on Gowanda State Road. Officers observed multiple violations prior to the stop, and during the investigation, the vehicle’s operator showed significant signs of intoxication. The driver admitted to consuming three large beers at the Corn Festival and failed multiple standardized field sobriety tests before being taken into custody. A chemical test revealed a blood alcohol content of .18%. The male was processed and released to a sober third party on numerous charges, including Driving While Intoxicated and Unlicensed Operation.
8/15 DWI – A male subject from Ohio was arrested during a traffic stop on Jennings Road, after multiple moving violations were observed by patrol. The operator failed multiple standardized field sobriety tests and had open containers of alcohol in the vehicle. The operator was taken into custody, charged with Driving While Intoxicated and several other offenses, then released to a sober third party.
8/19 Felony DWI – A 33-year-old female from Lackawanna was found to be intoxicated during a traffic stop on Gowanda State Road. Patrol discovered open alcoholic beverages and suspected psilocybin mushrooms within the vehicle, as well as her 8-year-old son. The female submitted to a chemical test, which revealed that her blood alcohol content was .12%. In addition to DWI under Leandra’s Law, the female was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and multiple other violations of the Vehicle & Traffic Law. A referral to Child Protective Services was made, and both parties were released to a responsible, sober third party.

With a new school year just around the corner, please remember to slow down, stay alert and watch for students and school buses. Be extra cautious in our school zones and through residential neighborhoods, watching for the increase in pedestrian traffic. Additional patrols will be out ensuring a safe transition for all Raiders headed back to school!
🚌Remember: When a school bus has its red lights flashing, STOP 🛑and remain stopped until the lights turn off and it is safe to proceed. New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law section 1174 states that drivers must stop from both directions when approaching a school bus with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm. Violations of this law could result in 5 points being assessed against your operating privilege.
