Today, our firefighters were overwhelmed by the kindness of our community. Throughout the day, individuals, businesses, and organizations stopped by our stations with meals, treats, and words of appreciation and prayers. We are incredibly grateful for every gesture.

Firefighters are often called “heroes,” and we are humbled whenever our community chooses to honor us that way. But today, we want to turn that word toward those who truly deserve our remembrance.

On September 11, 2001, firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, military members, ordinary citizens, and countless others demonstrated extraordinary courage in the face of unimaginable tragedy. Many went toward danger knowing others were desperately trying to escape it. Far too many never returned home.

Today is not about us.

It is about the 2,977 lives lost that day. It is about the 343 FDNY firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, 37 Port Authority Police officers, and other first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice. It is also about those who survived that day but later lost their lives to illnesses connected to their service at Ground Zero and the other attack sites.

So while we sincerely thank our community for remembering and caring for our firefighters today, we ask you to join us in remembering them.

The heroes who answered the call.
The innocent lives that were taken.
The families who never got to say goodbye.
And a nation that promised it would Never Forget.

Our training tower at Eden Station 4 serves multiple purposes. Of course our firefighters use it to learn and practice firefighting techniques, but we also hold multi-company trainings with other departments, we host the Rockingham Community College Fire Academy for training, and sometimes we host our Law Enforcement agencies for training as well. Today, we had the pleasure of having Rockingham County Sheriff's Office Deputy Pulliam and his K-9 partner, Olga to come by for a few minutes of training. Deputy Pulliam placed the "hide" items in strategic locations for Olga to "work", locate, and then "alert", which is indicating to the handler that she has located the item being requested or an item of interest. Olga successfully found several "hide" items inside the building as well as inside a vehicle. She also found a "lost" personal item belonging to her handler, which helps to keep her ready for times of searching for missing people. Thank you Deputy Pulliam and K-9 Olga for spending just a small part of your day to train at our facility!

Engineer/Pump Operator/Driver, however you classify it - it's one of the hardest jobs in the fire service. Not only are you responsible for getting the crew to the scene safely, you also need to understand what that crew may be facing inside the structure. A strong understanding of math is a must in order to know what water volumes and pressures to send down the line. And ultimately, the crew on the other end of the line depends on that engineer to provide them a continuous flow of water, as that is the lifeline for that crew! Training often is a must! Hats off to our Pump Operators, no matter what title you carry!
