Our Story
Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a civilian volunteer organization created on December 1, 1941, just a few days before the infamous Pearl Harbor attack. In January ‘42, German submarines (U-Boats) began attacking merchant vessels on the East Coast. However, Civil Air Patrol soon stepped in, flying coastal patrol to deter N**i attacks, as well as bombing submarines when sighted. For their service to our nation, President Barack Obama signed into law an order awarding all WWII members of Civil Air Patrol the Congressional Gold Medal, our countries highest civilian award.
Since World War II, CAP has undergone many changes. After the Air Force was created in 1947, CAP became the Air Force’s auxiliary, and now focuses on its three missions: Cadet Programs, Emergency Services, and Aerospace Education. Civil Air Patrol no longer carries weapons, but our members still wear the Air Force uniform, and are held to high standards.
Now, Civil Air Patrol members make up approximately 10 percent of the Air Force Academy’s cadets each year. In addition, although joining the military is by no means required after completion of the cadet program, cadets that have achieved the grade of Second Lieutenant will be offered immediate advancement to E-3 should they choose to enlist in the Air Force.
Civil Air Patrol currently performs more than 90% of all Search and Rescue missions in the US, and members have the opportunity to undergo extensive training in this area. However, Civil Air Patrol’s training caters to each of its members’ needs, ensuring that whatever your interests, we have a place for you to both learn life skills that you’ll use for the rest of your life, and just have fun!
