MDHHS and MDARD urge residents to use caution when buying and using pesticides

Michigan health officials warn against unregistered dichlorvos (DDVP) pesticides like Sniper and Nopest, linked to recent poisonings. Residents should buy only EPA-registered products and follow label directions. If exposed, contact Poison Control or a provider; safely dispose of illegal pesticides.

Exiting Your Vehicle Safely in Winter!

❖ Wear boots or skid-free shoes — no high heels.
❖ Pay attention to your surroundings — assess the condition of the ground around your vehicle, especially if it’s icy or wet.
❖ Step down, not out — step down with both feet (flat-footed) when getting out of your vehicle.
❖ Test for icy spots before standing — shuffle your feet before standing to assess for traction.
❖ Keep your hands free — do not grab objects as you are exiting. Exit the vehicle, then retrieve items, preferably in a backpack.
❖ Use the vehicle for support — grab onto the door frame or steering wheel to support yourself.
❖ Maintain three points of contact while exiting larger vehicles (trucks, SUVs, etc.) — two feet and one hand.
❖ Walk like a penguin — slow down and take
short steps; bend slightly; and walk flat-footed with your center of gravity directly over your feet.
❖ Report slippery or icy conditions to facilities, security, or follow your local process.
❖ Complete an RL, if you observe a slip and fall,
or if you slip and fall yourself.

As we prepare for extreme cold weather forecasted for next week, we want to remind everyone of the importance of cold weather safety. The forecast beginning on Monday into Tuesday predicts dangerously cold wind chills into double-digit temperatures below zero, creating an increased risk for frostbite and hypothermia.

Please take these safety precautions seriously during this period:

Dress appropriately for the weather and wear rubber-soled boots/shoes for traction.
Limit Time Outdoors: If possible, minimize time spent outside. If you must be outdoors, take frequent breaks in a warm environment.

Stay Dry: Wet clothing can increase the risk of frostbite, so stay dry and change wet clothes immediately.
Top off your gas tank before the extreme cold arrives.
Plan your route and give yourself enough time to travel.
Pack an extra lunch and snack foods just in case.
For those who drive, pack emergency supplies in your car such as:
Blankets, extra socks and mittens, a hat and a sweatshirt, hoodie or fleece.

Extra snacks and water bottles 2/3 full so the bottles don’t crack when frozen.
Shovel and windshield scraper; road salt and sand.
Flashlight and battery-powered weather radio with extra batteries.
Distress flag or flares.
Jumper cables, tow rope or chain.

Let’s all work together to stay safe and support each other during this extreme weather event!

Watch your step in wintry weather! Slips and falls are a major cause
of injuries. Take these precautions to stay safe this
winter:
Winter Weather Preparedness
❖ Wear boots or skid-free shoes — no high heels.
❖ Walk like a penguin — slow down and take short steps; bend slightly; and
walk flat-footed with your center of gravity directly over your feet.
❖ Pay attention to your surroundings — do not text and walk.
❖ Keep your hands free by carrying belongings in a bag or backpack.
❖ Consider wearing sunglasses during the day to cut down on glare.
Use designated walkways – do not walk on snow covered landscaping, hills, grassy courtyards, etc.
❖ Report slippery or icy conditions to the area, business, etc., you are visiting or follow your local process.
❖ When entering buildings, remove
snow and water from footwear to
prevent wet slippery conditions
indoors.
❖ If you observe a slip and fall, or if
you slip and fall yourself, report it immediately.
❖ Remember to park in cleared spaces to ensure
snow and ice removal is possible.
