Fire Safety for Seniors: 10 Tips to Prevent Fires at Home

As we age, the risk of fire-related injuries and deaths increases. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), adults age 65 and older are twice as likely to be injured or killed in a home fire as the general population. Seniors age 85 and older face the greatest risk.

Many of these fires are preventable. Understanding common fire hazards and taking simple precautions can help older adults remain safe and independent at home.

Whether you’re an older adult, family caregiver, or professional caregiver, these fire safety tips can help reduce fire risks and prepare everyone to respond quickly in an emergency.

Why Are Seniors at Greater Risk of House Fires?
Several age-related changes make older adults more vulnerable to fires and less able to escape safely. These include:
• Decreased Mobility: Older adults may have difficulty moving quickly during an emergency due to arthritis, balance problems, or the use of walkers or wheelchairs. Even a few extra seconds can make a difference during a fire.
• Sensory Impairments: Hearing or vision impairments can prevent seniors from noticing smoke, flames, or smoke alarm sounds. But fires can spread quickly; a small flame can turn into a major fire in less than 30 seconds.
• Cognitive Decline: Conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia may affect a person’s ability to recognize danger or respond appropriately during a fire.
Because of these factors, fire prevention is especially important for older adults aging in place.
Common Fire Hazards for Seniors
Many home fires start from everyday activities. Some of the most common fire hazards for seniors include:
• Unattended cooking
• Space heaters placed too close to furniture or bedding
• Smoking indoors
• Faulty electrical wiring or damaged cords
• Overloaded electrical outlets
• Candles left burning
• Oxygen tank or equipment near open flames
• Clutter blocking exits
• Forgotten appliances left on

Many of these hazards are preventable with a few simple changes around the home. Identifying potential risks before an emergency occurs can significantly reduce the chance of a house fire.

10 Fire Safety Tips for Seniors
1. Install & Maintain Smoke Alarms
Smoke alarms are one of the most important fire safety devices in any home.
• Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, especially outside sleeping areas.
• Test alarms every month.
• Replace batteries at least once a year.
• Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.
• Seniors with hearing loss should consider alarms with flashing lights or bed shakers

2. Plan & Practice an Escape Route
Every household should have an escape plan.
• Identify two exits from every room whenever possible.
• Keep hallways and doorways clear.
• Practice the plan regularly.
• Ensure walkers, canes, or wheelchairs are easily accessible.
• Designate an outdoor meeting place.
• The best fire escape plan is one that’s practiced before an emergency happens.

3. Cook Safely
Cooking is the leading cause of home fires. To reduce the risk:
• Never leave cooking unattended.
• Turn off the stove if you leave the kitchen.
• Keep towels, paper products, and curtains away from burners.
• Wear short or fitted sleeves while cooking.
• Use timers as reminders.
• If memory problems are a concern, consider appliances with automatic shut-off features.

4. Use Heating Equipment Carefully
Space heaters and fireplaces require extra caution.
• Keep heaters at least three feet from anything flammable.
• Turn heaters off before leaving the room or going to bed.
• Choose heaters with automatic tip-over shutoff.
• Always use a fireplace screen.

5. Practice Electrical Safety
Electrical problems are a common cause of home fires.
• Avoid overloading outlets.
• Replace damaged cords immediately.

Dauntless Fire Company was presented the 2026 Cliff Cherico Memorial Fire Prevention 1st place award for their fire prevention / fire safety program at the annual convention of the Cambria County Regional Firefighters Association hosted by the Adams Township Fire Company #2 of St. Michael.

Last evening was a first! Members participated in the pumping contest during the Cambria County Convention. However, with a twist, members took it old school. Out of retirement members pumped with our 1836 Sq**rt and laid the line with our 1871 Hand Cart. This is a reminder of how far the fire service has come. Keep the tradition going!
