GOT LOCATION IDEAS?

Volume One and the Chippewa River Trolley Co. could use your help. We’re brainstorming all kinds of fun historic and theatrical tours for next season, and part of that means we need interesting SPACES for stories and tours to play out. We’ve got ideas, but we also want yours!

We’re seeking both interior and exterior historic locations for scenes — homes, businesses, industrial spaces, etc. Anything that could be a cool setting for a couple dozen folks to file in off the trolley for a unique experience that we’d use the space to create. Think the historic Schlegelmilch House on Farwell Street, the old chapel in Lakeview Cemetery, or a historic downtown building like the State Theater.

Upper levels, basements, main level spaces, alleys or yards — anything is possible if it's a unique and historic space with character. These could be just your ideas for a spot you’ve always thought was interesting (for us to follow up on), or if you (or someone you tag!) actually has access to such a space, feel free to email our tours and events director Chris Finn at [email protected].

For Helen Kees – grower and co-owner of the Wheatfield Hill Organics farm in Durand – most of her days begin well before the sun breaks on the horizon. She is often already out in the fields, harvesting the season’s ripe offerings from the very landscapes which raised her.

Of course, Helen also works alongside her family, including her husband, “farmer Bob,” her daughter Chris Kees-Winkler and many other helping hands.

Over the past few years, viewers online have adopted the humble farm stewards as their “chosen family,” thanks to Helen’s virality on social media; videos where she talks Wheatfield Hill Organics have reached tens of millions of views, with thousands of comments from fans.

We caught up with Helen for a behind-the-scenes look into those viral moments, local food systems, her roots in biology and more.

Years ago, when husband-wife duo Huy Nguyen and Vivian Duong first crossed paths in northern Vietnam, culinary dreams echoed through their minds – ones that would eventually bloom into the recent opening of CHAO eatery in the heart of downtown Eau Claire.

“Everything is made from scratch – it’s a non-grease kitchen,” Vivian said. “That’s how we live at home and that’s what we want to bring into the community.”

Both owners celebrate their respective northern Vietnamese heritage and will offer locals a journey home through house-made pickled garlic, vibrant Thai peppers and a curated selection of traditional spices found in their noodle soups.

Still, Chao’s menu finds room for domestic flavors. Guests can enjoy familiar dishes with a twist, through the restaurant's house-glazed wings, hearty cajun shrimp boil overflowing with jumbo shrimp and southern spices – even philly cheesesteak flavors which round out Chao’s pasta dishes.

The Eau Claire City-County Health Department has closed Lake Altoona beach for the season – and issued a countywide beach advisory – just before this Labor Day weekend.

According to a new media release, the Wisconsin DHS and DNR today confirmed that Lake Altoona beach water samples contained algae toxin levels high enough to cause "significant health impacts to both humans and animals."

The department will continue to share updates online and on its page as new information is available.

What image do you first think of when you envision a monster? When you picture a vampire or a werewolf, is it akin to a human man, woman, or something otherworldly?

Ghouls Rule: A Celebration of Female Movie Monsters by Chippewa Valley author Emma Johnson — released with Microcosm Publishing — has compiled stories and visuals of monsters in film, displaying how they are depicted in different ways based on gender and feminine beauty ideals.

At 2pm on Oct. 10 at The Beyond, Johnson will be joined by fellow horror authors for a book signing and Q&A on her book. The free to attend event will surely spark lively discussion on what it means when women portray gross, slimy ghouls — and other “monsters” — and how this challenges patriarchal norms.

On Thursday, Sept. 17, Dr. Laurie Mintz will lead two talks at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire: One at 11:30am for clinicians to better help their patients, and one at 5pm for the public to better understand and advocate for their own sexual health.

Because sexual health is part of overall health. Erica Barrette — a local OBGYN and the woman behind the women's wellness company Heartland Hotflash — is bringing Dr. Mintz to Eau Claire to open that conversation up to the community, namely to discuss diminished desire and or***ms.

Be ready with questions and leave feeling more knowledgeable and empowered. Consider bringing a copy of Dr. Laurie Mintz's book to get signed at the event.

Helm's Deep, a newer house venue led by UW-Stout Polytechnic students in Menomonie, will return for its first fall semester show on Friday, Sept. 4, with central Wisconsin pop-punk outfit Miss Used, rock outfit Candy Sweet from La Crosse, and Stopping Short, also from La Crosse.

Team Eau Claire, a local 12-person group, is gearing up for the Ride to End ALZ event on Saturday, Sept. 19 — a recreation and fundraising event supporting the Alzheimer's Association's continued research.

As of August, Team Eau Claire — sponsored by Scheels and Costco, Red Flint Racing and Spring Street Sports — has raised $16,000 toward its $20,000 goal. The group, formed by locals Dr. Mark Tomasic and Jeff Thielen (each with family members who passed from Alzheimer's and dementia), completed last year's Ride to End ALZ.

Over the course of 40-plus years, Attorney Dana Wachs has seen a lot in the legal world. Since launching his law career in 1985 at home to co-founding Gingras, Thomsen & Wachs in 2018, up to today, going to bat for clients has become much more than a career.

“The art of trial law is somewhat jeopardized by various entities and procedures. There’s so much mediation going on nowadays, and there are fewer and fewer law firms that actually try cases,” Wachs said in a recent interview.

“That’s why we take the hard cases others won’t,” Wachs added. “We’re not afraid to sue massive corporations. Whether it takes a few days, a few weeks or several years, we are all in.”

Much of the GTW team’s time is spent building a bulletproof case for their clients, and that means dozens of hours of research before ever entering a courtroom — something aided by the relationships the team has built with leading physicians and experts across the country, over its decades of experience.
