When you walk into the Orcas Island Public Library, what do you see? It is strong, built with heavy wooden rafters, a spacious building obviously designed by an architect with style and flair. What’s your favorite part of the Library? Perhaps it is the line of computers. Perhaps the stacks of books. More into Books on tape? They are available. As is a large area for children.
Perhaps your choice is sitting in the quiet reading area within reach of current newspapers and magazines? Books in large print? Got you covered. Those too. You want to read a book that the library doesn’t have? That’s where Inter-Library loan comes in. Movie tonight? Check one out free from the Library. Study carrels. Storytime. Friendly people at the check out desk. Meeting room. These are all part of what makes up our remarkable Orcas Island Library. As you might rightly assume from the name, Friends of the Orcas Island Library has an important and supportive role. Friends is a volunteer group whose purpose is to make money for the Library allowing it to provide you with some of the extras that its budget doesn’t cover. Within the last few years Friend’s contributions have included (but are not limited to….) Sunday hours, a new online library system, landscaping improvements for the 20th Anniversary, summer reading program support, newspaper microfilm reader, CD display racks, laminating machine, DVD resurfacing machine, and the NY Times subscription. Orcas children have specifically benefitted by StoryFest performers and programs, book clubs, Halloween trick or treat books, moveable shelving and new window blinds in their area. Friends of the Orcas Island Library work throughout the year collecting, sorting, boxing and selling books donated by Orcas residents at both the Winter Book Sale in February and the Annual Book Fair the second Saturday in August. To support a volunteer organization dedicated to improving the library we all use-- an organization that prepares a lavish and free Holiday Tea every December to thank the community--please consider using the enclosed envelope to join Friends of the Orcas Island Library with a renewal of your current membership or with a new membership for 2014. Our Library works hard for us and has been recognized as one of the best in the state. Per capita, it consistently ranks in the top five in the state for visits and check outs. The collection size is double the average size for a community the size of Orcas. Consider it time to return the favor with our financial support.
