On Friday evening , April 3rd, the Eastport Fire Department was alerted to a chimney fire. Upon arrival, Chief Virginia Haughn notified Suffolk County FRES of a working fire, with smoke showing from the eaves.

Engine 5-8-3 stretched a handline to the attic, with information from the residents of where the location of the fire was and the best access, crews quickly located and contained the fire, the incident was placed under control within the hour.

We would like to thank Westhampton Beach Fire Department, East Moriches Fire Department , Quogue Fire Department, and Manorville Fire Department for covering the district.

We also thank Southampton Town Police Department , Westhampton Beach Police Department and Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance for their support.

Additional Eastport units on scene included 5-8-31, 5-8-32, Engine 5-8-5 and Fire Police 5-8-8.

It was a Great job by all agencies involved.

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the women who step forward to serve their communities with courage, dedication, and heart.

At the Eastport Fire Department, women are an important part of our team. They answer the call as firefighters, serve as officers and leaders, run businesses, raise families, and volunteer their time to protect and support our community. Firefighting is built on service, teamwork, and commitment, and the women of our department demonstrate these values every day.

This year also marks a meaningful milestone for the department with the installation of its first female Fire Chief—an example of the progress being made in the fire service and the opportunities that exist for the next generation.

We are also grateful for the continued support of the Eastport Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, whose members work behind the scenes to support both the women and men of the department and help strengthen the bonds within the fire service.

Together, these women represent the spirit of volunteerism that keeps our department strong. Just as importantly, they are committed to encouraging and mentoring the next generation of volunteers—sharing knowledge, building confidence, and showing new members that they have a place in the fire service.

Today, we recognize and thank all of the women of the Eastport Fire Department—those who wear the gear, those who support the mission, and those helping shape the future of the fire service.

Happy International Women’s Day.

Last week Eastport firefighters assisted Helping Makes U Happy with a cooking event.

A big thank you to Chef Keith Owens for leading the way and teaching everyone how to make delicious chicken fajitas (which were a big hit!), while also sharing his message of kindness that makes these events so special.

We were proud to have Captain Joseph Tortorice, Lieutenant Joseph Dalen, and firefighter May Zegarelli on hand to present important kitchen fire safety tips, answer questions, and even help with the cooking. The team also brought along some fire department souvenirs for everyone to take home!

Thank you to Helping Makes U Happy for sponsoring two great days of learning, cooking, and community connection. We’re grateful to serve a community that always shows up to support us — and we love opportunities like this to give back.

Stay safe — and remember, kitchen safety starts with you!
