😔The Harsh Reality Around The World😔

This video is not from our department or even in Michigan. However, this happens daily around the world. We do not know the outcome of this pet. We are sharing this video to encourage owners to microchip their pets before it's too late for your fur baby. We are not the bad guys, we are trying to help educate the owners and the public to share the knowledge to help a future lost pet. Please do your part and share the knowledge wealth to help owners & their pets.

Accidents happen all the time. Someone forgot to shut the gate, you were bringing in groceries and left the door open, you had a house fire, or maybe you just let your pets out your front door unattended because you haven't gotten caught yet, the list goes on with how accidents happen that result in your pets roaming.

Pets do not understand red means stop or that a sidewalk is safer than the road. Pets are voiceless. There is no paw print process (finger print for humans), there is no dna database, there is no missing pets report shared among all of the agencies in a 100 mile radius. They rely on you to help identify them.

The first thing we do once the pet is safely secured, we immediately scan for a microchip. With every wish upon a star, we wish to always find a microchip. Why? Because then you are immediately contacted and we can reunite you with your pet so they can get emergency assistance if injured.

Do you know what happens when they are not chipped? Most animal control agencies do not have an endless budget for emergency veterinary care. Most rescues can not afford to take on a $5K and up vet bill for one pet on the off chance the pet will survive and be adoptable. Difficult decisions are often made to end the suffering of the pet. No pet should sit in a shelter waiting in pain on a "what-if chance" their owner shows up the same day or in the next few days or even in the same week. That is cruel and inhumane punishment for the pet. These decisions do not go without sleepless nights for the ones making the decisions.

This is just one of the reasons why we pushed for mandatory microchipping in Eastpointe. Sadly, we picked up several pets last year and this year already that had been so severely injured they were found deceased. Some pets laid suffering in the street not yet passed.

This is not fair to the pet, to our staff, or to you. Despite our staff loving their career, we have difficult sad days too often and hate making these decisions because an owner can not be found quickly. You, as the owner, should be present with your pet if that decision is to be made. You should be the last person they see as they cross the rainbow bridge. Although we show them love in their final moments, it is nothing compared to the love they have had for you. They deserve all the chance in the world you can offer them and if you can't offer them assistance, then they deserve to say goodbye to you, their family.

☀️ Temperature Reminder ☀️

It's that time of the year again where we have to remind residents of the temperature ordinance. We're going to sound like a broken record if it means saving a life from possible heat stroke.

From 1️⃣1️⃣ am to 6️⃣ pm the weather ordinance is in full effect❗️

This is not difficult, folks. When you leave for work, leave your pets inside the house. Not inside a shed, garage, or dog house either, that's a punishable offense.

❌️ PUNISHABLE OFFENSES ABOVE 82 DEGREES ❌️

▪️Leaving pets in cars unattended.
▪️Leaving pets outside over 30 minutes.
▪️Housing dogs in garages.
▪️Housing dogs in shed.
▪️Housing dogs in dog house.
▪️Housing dogs in kennels outside.
▪️Not having water provided while outside.
▪️Tethering a dog to a tree or fence. (Tethering into the ground is acceptable but for only 30 minutes.)

😉 Fun fact: the ordinance does not care what breed your pet is. It applies to every pet.

Here's what to do if you come across a welfare concern:
▪️Call to report 586.445.5100 ext. 1035
▪️Call to report to non emergency dispatch - 586.777.6700
▪️ Message on our page.

💡UPDATE: Power is back on. We will resume office hours on next business day, Monday at 9am.💡

🚨 Closed Due To Power Outage 🚨

Sorry for the inconvenience.

We are experiencing a power outage at this time. The office is temporarily closed. Office phone lines are also down.

The animals are unharmed, doing well, and being cared for. They seem to be pleased with quiet time 😆.

We will update as soon as we have power back on 🤞.

🐾 Help Us Wrap Our Shelter Pets in Cozy Love! 🐾

Our shelter pets are amazing at waiting — but let's be honest, they'd rather be waiting in a warm, snuggly blanket than just a dog cot.

Items we are not accepting 🙃:
👎️ Blankets/towels/sheets with HOLES.
👎 Heated blankets
👎️ Wash cloth towels (small hand towels)
👎️ Pillows
👎 Pillow cases

We are collecting donations of 😁:
🛏️ Blankets
🛁 Body sized towels
⛺️️ Sleeping bags
🛌 Sheets (fleece, flannel, soft cotton, fitted or flat sheet)
🐾️ cat/dog beds
😃️ Stuffed animals (no beads inside)
🐈️ Cat toys

Why your towels and blankets are heroes 🦸‍♀️🦸‍♂️:
✅ They keep fluffy and short haired butts warm (and butts are important)
✅ They turn a kennel into a five-star nap suite
✅ They make stressed pets feel like they're already home

Drop-off Details:
📍 17850 10 Mile, Eastpointe
🗓️ Donations can be dropped off inside our shed located by our front door at anytime. We check it daily.

Help keep our four-legged friends comfy and cozy! Share this post to spread the word and help us keep their tails wagging and purrs rumbling all year long!
Our shelter pets are amazing at waiting — but let's be honest, they'd rather be waiting in a warm, snuggly blanket fort than on a cold floor.

🐾CASE UPDATE: JUSTICE IN PROGRESS 🐾

Dezhiar Blair, of Eastpointe, pled guilty to Third-Degree Animal Torture. The charge stems from Blair kicking her mother’s dog in the head, causing it to lose an eye. The charge is a 4-year felony and the maximum charge available under the law based upon the evidence presented to date.

On Monday, May 4, 2026, Blair pled guilty as charged at a Pretrial Conference before James M. Biernat, Jr. in Macomb County Circuit Court. Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Justin Pollard represented the People at the hearing and objected to Blair’s request to be sentenced under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act (HYTA), which would allow her to avoid a public criminal conviction if she were to successfully complete ordered terms of probation.

Blair is scheduled to be sentenced before Judge Biernat on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. Judge Biernat will decide Blair’s sentence, including whether to sentence her under HYTA.

“Animal cruelty is not a minor offense—it is a clear indicator of disregard for life and the rule of law. When individuals choose to harm defenseless animals, they will face serious consequences. My office is committed to protecting the vulnerable, enforcing the law, and ensuring that those who inflict suffering are held accountable,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.

A judge also denied a request to lower her $50,000 bond, and she remains in custody with a no-contact order involving animals. Sentencing is now set for June 9.

🐾 A Year Later, Home at Last! 🐾

Today in Eastpointe, a stray dog was found running around — and thanks to a kind resident who did the right thing and brought her to Eastpointe Animal Control, this pup, now known as Cai, got a second chance at home!

We ask found animals for their address all the time, but they never give it to us. Why, because they are unable to. Up to date registered microchips are the one irrefutable resource that helps get your baby back home!

Cai was microchipped, but the address and 2 out of 3 phone numbers were outdated. Still, the email address was correct! Not even 5 minutes after sending that email, we got a call from the overjoyed owner.

Turns out, Cai had been missing for an entire year! The owner is currently away at college, so Cai’s grandma (Mom of owner who was also owner) rushed over to pick him up. Watch the reunion unfold in the video — the joy is absolutely priceless! 🥹💕

Welcome home, Cai!

Thank you 24Petwatch for maintaining the owner's contact information!

Did you know ... 🤔

🐾 Eastpointe Police Animal Control Division has been offering FREE microchips to Eastpointe pets for being proactive for almost a year now? No money grab here, we just want pets to be microchipped to be reunited faster 😉.

🐾 Did you know that when your pet is impounded & NOT microchipped as a stray, you are charged $25 for a microchip plus an impound fee before being reunited? Don't be silly, take advantage of the free opportunity while it lasts 😏!

🐾 Did you know that the microchips were purchased with a grant that Officer Sanchez was awarded in 2025 to microchip up to 600 Eastpointe pets? This means no tax payer dollars went into these microchips 😃.

🐾 Did you know that the microchips implanted by EAC does not cost any annual fees? You have complete access to update (change) your contact information at any time. You also have unlimited changes to your pet's microchip. Again, included in our microchips 😎.

🐾 Did you know that microchips are now a mandatory ordinance for Eastpointe resident cats & dogs? Failure to do so results in mandatory court 😳.

🐾 Interested in getting your Eastpointe resident pet microchipped 🤩?

Reach out to us or stop by! Please be patient with us in case we are out of the office on a case. If you call, please leave a voicemail so we can return your call.

Kane was not microchipped but is now microchipped and registered for FREE!

Leia was microchipped, but the owner's were unsure how to update the information. Leia was scanned, owners were provided her chip number, and given the microchip's company contact information to update their information.

🥳 Kudos to Kane & Leia's parents for being proactive, following the ordinance, and being outstanding owners!

🤩 Important Update For Eastpointe Residents! 🤩

We are excited to announce that Eastpointe is now the FIRST city in the state of Michigan to implement mandatory microchipping requirements for all resident cats and dogs 🐕🐈‍⬛😍!

This new ordinance will help ensure that lost pets are quickly reunited with their families and promote responsible pet ownership across our community🐾. Among mandatory microchipping, we also have several new ordinances you need to know.

📢What you need to know (summarized):

▪️All resident cats & dogs 4 months old and older are now required to have a registered (with current contact information) microchip.

▪️Owning an intact (not fixed) male cat & intact (not fixed) female cat is now prohibited. One of the sexes is required to be altered. Breeding (or accidental) is prohibited.

▪️Whether confined or not, animals are not permitted to ride in the bed of trucks or any other external part of any moving vehicle.

▪️A person may not keep an animal in a motor vehicle or other enclosed space in which the animal's health or life is endangered by high temperature, low temperature, or inadequate ventilation. A police officer or animal control officer may, after attempting to locate the animal’s owner, remove the animal from a vehicle or enclosed space using any reasonable means, including breaking a window or lock. If professional services are required to remove the animal, the owner shall be responsible for the cost.

▪️Domestic Ducks (wildlife not included) are now prohibited (unless currently grandfathered in with animal control's approval. Once those pets are relocated or deceased, they may not be replaced.)

▪️Kennel permits are now prohibited (unless currently grandfathered in with the Chief of Police's approval. Once those pets are relocated or deceased, they may not be replaced until down to three dogs.)

▪️Rabbits (wildlife not included) or other exotic animal is not permitted to live outside, in sheds, or in garage.

▪️Rabbits (wildlife not included) or other exotic animal is not permitted to be outdoors from 11pm to 7am.

▪️Rabbits (wildlife not included) or other exotic animal is not permitted outdoors below 43 degrees or above 82 degrees.

Thank you for helping make Eastpointe a safer, more pet-friendly family city!
