🧯 Annual Fire Extinguisher Training — Back to Basics

As volunteers, we never stop training. Today the members of Easton Volunteer Fire Department completed our annual fire extinguisher refresher, and there’s a reason we do this every year.

It’s easy to get caught up chasing the next advanced drill or the latest tactic — and that training absolutely has its place. But sometimes it’s the basics that make the difference between a small fire and a major loss. Knowing how to properly hold an extinguisher, where to aim it, and how to apply the PASS method — Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep — takes practice, not just a poster on the wall.

You don’t want someone picking up a fire extinguisher for the first time in a high-stress, high-risk situation. That’s exactly why we train for it in a controlled environment, so when that moment comes, the muscle memory is already there.

With proper training and education, fire extinguishers can save lives and property — and that’s true whether you’re a trained firefighter or a member of the public. The best departments keep the fundamentals built into their training calendar year after year, because the basics are the foundation everything else is built on.

Proud of our members for showing up and putting in the work. That’s what being a volunteer is all about. 💪🔥

Today members of the Easton Volunteer Fire Department took an exciting step forward in hands-on training — seasoning our brand new fire simulation training structure.

Before any training facility can be put to full use, it has to go through a process called seasoning. New construction materials hold a lot of moisture, and introducing intense heat too quickly damage the structure before it ever sees a real training scenario. Seasoning solves that by starting small — low-intensity, controlled burns that gradually build up a carbon layer on the interior surfaces. That carbon layer actually helps regulate heat in future burns and protects the structure long-term.

Today’s crews ran the first burns, keeping temperatures controlled and monitoring the structure closely. It’s the first step in a multi-session process that will bring the facility up to full operating capability — and when it’s ready, it’ll give our members one of the best hands-on training environments around.

We’re proud of the work going into this program and grateful for the members who showed up tonight to get it started. More to come as we work toward full operations.

The Easton Volunteer Fire Department is issuing this statement to address misinformation currently circulating on social media. A post on the Easton Police Department’s page and other social media platforms has linked our organization to an assault incident from February 26, 2026. Although Easton Police officers responded to our location, the incident occurred on a public access road between a EVFD parking lot and our firehouse — not within our facility. The individuals involved have no affiliation with our organization and were not guests or visitors at the firehouse. This matter is unrelated to the Easton Volunteer Fire Department or its members. We have no further comment. The Board of Directors of the Easton Volunteer Fire Department.

Saturday evening our Easton Volunteers answered the call to a major incident at Dependable Sand and Gravel, 13155 Ocean Gateway. What started as a Cordova Box 5-3 dispatch around 18:10 hours quickly grew into a multi-alarm operation.

First-arriving units found a 2-story commercial structure with heavy fire showing and serious exposure concerns. Crews went defensive. Acres of mulch, wood chips, and log piles were burning across the property.

Tankers shuttled more than 120,000 gallons of water to keep the attack lines flowing. Tanker task forces, mutual aid companies, and Maryland Forestry all played a part. Forestry crews cut containment breaks and ran back burns to box the fire in.

The work didn’t end Saturday night. Sunday brought crews back out for relief and continued operations. The fire will keep burning itself out within the containment lines Forestry established, and smoke and active fire will be visible in the area for some time. The property owners and Forestry are monitoring it.

To every volunteer who left their family on a Saturday evening, pulled an overnight, or came back Sunday to relieve a tired crew, thank you. This is what mutual aid looks like, and this is what your neighbors do for each other.

🚒 Talbot County Sutphen Family Reunion 🚒

After the Cordova parade today, all the Talbot County Sutphens lined up for a family photo. The oldest still in service is Easton’s Engine 65, a 1992, and the newest is Cordova’s Squad 51, a 2025.

33 years separate them, and both are still answering the call.

Huge congratulations to the Cordova Volunteer Firemen’s Association on 100 years of service! 🎉
A group of our Easton volunteers traveled out to Cordova today to help celebrate this incredible milestone, and we couldn’t be prouder of how our crews represented the company:
• Engine 63 — 2nd Best Appearing, 1500 GPM and over
• Tanker 61 — Best Appearing Tanker, 3500 and over
• Ambulance 60 — Best Overall Ambulance
• Station 60 — Best Appearing Company Overall
A century of service doesn’t happen by accident. It takes generations of volunteers showing up, day in and day out, for their neighbors. Thank you to the members, families, and residents of Cordova for everything you’ve given to Talbot County over the last 100 years. Here’s to the next 100. 🚒
