Easthampton, MA- The National Weather Service has outlined some oppressive heat and humidity for this week. Extreme heat can be dangerous and even life-threatening if proper precautions are not taken. To ensure everyone has access to a cool area during these times, the City of Easthampton will be establishing a cooling area at the Easthampton Public Safety Complex located at 32 Payson Avenue. The cooling area will be available to the public on Friday through Sunday, 24 hours. Space is available inside the main lobby to accommodate individuals needing refuge from the environmental elements. Face coverings will be available for individuals who wish to have one. The cooling area will have drinking water for those using the facility.

Additional information to follow during extreme heat situations are as follows:
- Never leave children or pets alone in a closed vehicle. Even with the windows cracked open, interior temperatures can rise almost 20°F within 10 minutes.
- Slow down and avoid strenuous activity.
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Light colors reflect heat and sunlight and help maintain normal body temperature.
- Drink plenty of water — even if you are not thirsty. Avoid alcoholic beverages and liquids high in sugar or caffeine. If your doctor generally limits the amount of fluid you drink, ask how much you should drink during hot weather.
- Eat well-balanced, light, regular meals.
- Stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun. Do not leave pets outside for extended periods of time.

If you must be outdoors, limit your outdoor activity to the morning and evening hours. Try to rest often in shady areas so your body temperature will have a chance to recover. Use sunscreen with a high SPF and wear a wide-brimmed hat.
If you do not have air conditioning, stay on your lowest floor, out of the sun. Use fans to stay cool and avoid using your stove and oven. Consider spending time in air-conditioned public spaces, such as schools, libraries, theaters, and other community facilities.

On hot days, more people cool off around bodies of water. Playing in and around water can increase the risk of drowning.

Know the symptoms of and watch out for heat-related illnesses. Call 9-1-1 to report emergencies.

Be a good neighbor. Check on family, friends, and neighbors, especially the elderly, those who live alone, those with medical conditions, those who may need additional assistance, and those who may not have air conditioning.

The City of Easthampton encourages everyone to stay safe and to please use these resources if needed during these times. Thank you.

EASTHAMPTON, MA — The City of Easthampton has been awarded $191,718 through the Healey-Driscoll Administration’s Community Compact Municipal Fiber Grant Program to complete the City’s municipal fiber loop for Water Department infrastructure.

This new award builds on $500,000 in grant funding secured over the past three years, bringing outside investment in Easthampton’s fiber network to $691,718.
The project will connect critical Water Department facilities, including pumps, wells, and tanks, to the City’s secure municipal fiber network. Completing the loop will improve reliability, strengthen cybersecurity, and reduce long-term communication costs by allowing City facilities to communicate over a private network.

“This is a great example of City staff finding grant opportunities, bringing outside funding into Easthampton, and turning it into lasting improvements for the community,” said Mayor Salem Derby.

The City is grateful to the Healey-Driscoll Administration and the Community Compact Cabinet for supporting this important infrastructure project, which will benefit Easthampton for years to come.

Easthampton, MA - At approximately 12:30 this afternoon, Easthampton Public Safety received a call for a structure fire. Easthampton Police and Easthampton Fire responded and arrived to find all four occupants out of this multi-family house, and fire was already extending out the second-floor windows up into the third-floor attic space. Under the command of Captain Dunham, a second alarm was requested, bringing in additional resources. The initial Easthampton Fire crews were limited as two firefighters were committed to an emergency ambulance response. Four shift firefighters responded from Easthampton, allowing us to make an interior attack to begin fire suppression operations. As mutual aid crews arrived, they were assigned additional interior tactics. Due to the increasing fire, a third alarm was requested by Chief Norris, bringing in more resources, and all personnel were ordered out of the building. Exterior operations were initiated using aerial master streams from Easthampton, Northampton, Holyoke, and Westfield. Once the fire was darkened down, crews continued interior operations and fully extinguished the fire. There were no injuries in this fire, and the American Red Cross is currently working with the occupants to find temporary housing. Mutual aid units that responded included Northampton, Southampton, Holyoke, Westover, Barnes Air National Guard, Westfield, South Hadley District 1, Westhampton, Easthampton CERT, DFS Rehab unit, and Pioneer Valley Ambulance.
An investigation into this fire, which was conducted by the Massachusetts State Police, Easthampton Police, and Easthampton Fire, found the cause to be an unattended candle. This occupancy did not have residential sprinklers; however, working smoke detectors alerted all occupants, allowing them to safely exit the structure.
I cannot say enough how proud I am of all the emergency responders and the initial Easthampton Dispatch, PD, and FD personnel initiating these operations in challenging conditions. Limited staffing, a large two-family house, a fire self-vented before arrival, a fire extending into the third-floor attic, a slate roof, other houses in proximity creating significant exposure challenges, and the temperatures exacerbating the stress on the firefighters. Saving their remaining property and contents, as well as keeping it contained to the one house with those close exposures, was arduous. This event is so unfortunate, and please keep these families in your thoughts. Thank you all, first responders…beyond proud.
