Yesterday we completed our annual hose testing. This closed out all of our annual service testing on our equipment for this current fiscal year. Equipment included hose and nozzle testing, pump testing, self-contained breathing apparatus, extinguishers, extrication equipment, ground ladders, and aerial ladder. This annual service and testing is outlined in the national standards, is in line with industry best practice, ensures all equipment is in a state of operational readiness for emergency response, helps to increase the safety of our personnel, increases the operational life span of the equipment, and helps to lower a community’s insurance service organization (ISO) rating when being evaluated. Easthampton recently benefited from this when the community ISO rating was lowered from a 5 to a 3 (10 is worse and 1 is best) for the first time ever. Thank you to the community for your continued support for ensuring the safety of this emergency equipment.

On Thursday, the fire department was dispatched to Holyoke Street for a reported dumpster fire in close proximity to the house. There was five firefighters on shift for the day. At the time of this call, 1 person was available on the shift. The Training Officer coordinated with the one shift person to respond together on the engine as the other 4 shift personnel were unavailable due to simultaneous ambulance calls. Our fire inspector also left a scheduled inspection to assist on this emergency and our Deputy Fire Chief met the engine on scene. Fire was quickly suppressed and contained with no extension to the house.

Timeline leading up to this fire response:

11:31- A2 medical response and transport
12:29- A3 medical response and transport
12:33- A1 medical response and transport (Deputy Chief was part of this crew as all other shift personnel already committed on emergency responses)
13:05- A2 medical response- no transport- refusal
13:41- A3 medical response and transport
14:26- A2 medical response and transport
14:28- Engine 2 dumpster fire response next to house. 1 shift personnel with Training Officer respond.

***Response time to this fire with the 2 personnel- 3 minutes***

Great job by our personnel making it work as we always do and continue to do. You can see the roof overhang and soffit vents in close proximity to the dumpster. Fire gets up there, or a prolonged response time, and the outcome could have been different. 2000 gallons of water were needed to fully extinguish the fire, and this information was also provided to the water department for their records that day.

The residential brush burning season has concluded for the year. We issued 275 burn permits this year. A number of days, we did not issue any permits due to the drought conditions, environmental conditions, or air quality conditions based on recommendations from the MA DEP. Four fires got out of control and required an emergency response. Thanks to the quick response of our personnel, no structures were impacted and less than 2 acres collectively was burned.

One example we'll share occurred on Line Street during the last week of April. Crews were out conducting routine inspections of the permits that were issued. As they arrived in the area of one permitted open burn, the homeowner was just running in to call for help. The wind had picked up and began pushing the fire into the grass and leaves. Crews assisted with containing the fire and full extinguishment to mitigate the situation.

Thank you to the community for your continued understanding of issuing or not issuing permits, and for following the open burning regulations. Without your continued support, outcomes could be a lot different. We appreciate all of you!
