At 00:55 hours, Easthampton Public Safety received a 911 call for a reported house fire. Easthampton Fire and Police responded and found smoke and fire coming from the second floor of a residential house. Under the command of Lieutenant Schrader, crews conducted a primary search with a charged hose line and were able to keep the fire contained to the bedroom. Mutual aid was received from Northampton Fire Rescue, Southampton Fire, and Barnes Air National Guard. Easthampton Police were phenomenal in helping ensure everyone was out of the home, and helping establish a water supply to the hydrant. 1 adult and 4 children were home at the time of the fire along with two dogs. All personnel self-evacuated and made it out safely with the animals. Investigation of the fire was conducted by the Easthampton Police and Fire Departments and found the cause to be accidental in nature due to an ignition source from a v**e pen. The structure did not have residential sprinklers but did have working smoke detectors that alerted all occupants in the home. It should be noted, the investigation found the homeowner did close the bedroom door prior to exiting the house. This action helped contain the fire to the area of origin in one room and minimized the airflow to the fire prior to fire suppression efforts.
