Our young patrons and their families enjoyed a wonderful hour on gardening in the early 19th century with educators from Old Sturbridge Village. Though the Village demonstrates life in 1830, gardening practices in Colonial Days were not that different. The children learned about the importance of the Three Sisters - planting corn, squash and runner beans together for practicality and sustenance. They tried to guess what different gardening tools were used for on the farm and learned that children were quite accomplished in their ability to help out around the homestead by age 5!! Each child planted their own heirloom bean to take home, and then, they worked as a group learning how a construct a zig-zag fence to keep animals out of the garden. You might also know this style of fence by other names - Virginia Fence, Worm or Snake Fence or Split Rail Fence. And if that wasn't enough, the kids also made adorable, little seed packets!
