Today, the Eastchester Fire District hosted and participated in a Basic Elevator Rescue class.

The classroom portion of the training was conducted at the district’s Bronxville firehouse, followed by a hands-on practical session at NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester Hospital.

This training provided members with critical knowledge and real-world skills necessary to safely and effectively mitigate elevator emergencies, reinforcing the district’s ongoing commitment to preparedness, technical proficiency, and public safety. 📸 Lt. DiRienzo

Correction: Address is 610 Lake Avenue, Bronxville.
At approximately 9:58 p.m. on Sunday, December 7, the Eastchester Fire Department responded to a reported fire at the Rivermere Apartments, located at 610 Lake Avenue in Bronxville. Eighteen EFD members arrived on scene and were advised of residents possibly trapped on the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th floors. A second alarm was transmitted, bringing additional support from the Yonkers and Mount Vernon Fire Departments.

The fire was located in a second-floor apartment. Upon arrival, Bronxville Police reported that the building superintendent was assisting the resident of the fire apartment down a ladder; officers aided in completing that rescue. Firefighters also rescued a civilian from a third-floor apartment. Both individuals were transported to the hospital. Residents on the fifth floor were able to self-evacuate.

Tragically, one resident could not be saved and passed away. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the family by the Bronxville Police Department.

The fire is not considered suspicious and remains under investigation by the Yonkers Fire Department Cause and Origin Team. The American Red Cross is assisting displaced residents with housing as needed. At
