Scott Barmore has been incarcerated for 25 years and has maintained his innocence since day 1. He doesn’t claim to have been a perfect person at just 19 years old but he does know who he is not and that’s someone who didn’t do what he was accused of. We will hear Scott’s full poem . What is Juneteenth to the American Slave… tomorrow evening at Tracy ( T-Spirit) Stanton Fathers, Families, Freedom Event where we will discuss Juneteenth and the 13th.

We are committed to liberating the voices and experiences of currently incarcerated people.

.thingsmustbeheard attended Bridging the Gap Conference in Chicago. The conference was organized primarily by currently incarcerated writers and journalist in collaboration and partnership with organizations across the conditions and the harmful consequences of the Prison Industrial Complex on families, communities, and society as a whole.

We heard from currently incarcerated journalists, formerly incarcerated writers, poets, and other survivors of incarceration. There is no way that I can’t describe the feeling that we felt by being amongst folks who refuse to let the system silence them.

We left inspired and even more sure about our mission. More to come

First off, we are not going to spend time trying to convince the other side why we are of value .eleven

We are trying to move us toward a liberation framework that supports and uplifts Black Trans people in an idea that once black Trans Womxn are free, we can all be free .ashe

June Jordan taught us that language is political. The oppressors have weaponized narratives against marginalized communities for centuries to justify colonialism, land theft, slavery, incarceration, and unjustified murder.

These harmful narratives are directly connected to over-policing, incarceration, and the consistent murder of black bodies. Somatic therapist and author of My Grandmother’s Hands, Resma, informed us that, “Trauma is also a wordless story our body tells itself about what is safe and what is a threat.” These narratives live in black and white bodies and are expressed in our actions.

When white bodies feel unsafe they disproportionately incarcerate and kill black bodies and when black bodies feel unsafe they predominantly harm other black bodies. Capitalism, grind culture, and moving with a consistent sense of urgency impacts all bodies. It’s imperative that we create new stories, retrieve our ancient stories, tell the truth about the wholeness that sits in our core, and make space to be with each other and the land.

I don’t agree with 🛑 Stop signs because only freedom run these streets …

The man, the myth, the ninja, the teacher, the scholar, the writer, the poet, the builder, came to .thingsmustbeheard on 3/22/24 and torched the stage while also educating the people. This was not just a poetry set. It was a history lesson…

is not to be played with on or off the stage. He practices what he poets. He doesn’t just write, he lives

For context, a Cultural Organizer is someone who works at the intersection of arts, culture, spirituality, and social justice, using creative practices to build community power and drive systemic change.

They integrate tools like poetry, music, theater, storytelling, and ritual into organizing strategies to shift cultural narratives, raise collective consciousness, advance abolitionist practices, and give vision to a transformed world.
