This week in 1976, the Meadowlands Sports Complex opened its doors to the Meadowlands Racetrack. The Meadowlands Medical Department also opened its doors to support live horse racing and the opening of Giants Stadium shortly after that same year.

At the time, the Meadowlands only owned 2 of the ambulances (124 and 238) that operated at the Meadowlands Racetrack and Giants Stadium.

Today, at the monthly commissioners meeting of the NJSEA, EMS Chief Fran Guthrie, RN was honored with a proclamation honoring her 49 years of service to the NJSEA Medical Department. She will be retiring on August 1st and we thank her for her leadership and service. Starting as a staff nurse in 1977 and working her way up to Chief of EMS, Fran has managed Medical and EMS Operations for thousands of events at the Meadowlands Sports Complex.

EMS Coordinator Tony Vagueiro was also honored by the NJSEA for his 45 years of service to the authority starting as an EMT in 1981, and making his way up to EMS Coordinator in 2006. Tony will also be retiring on August 1st.

Please join us in congratulating EMS Chief Fran Guthrie, RN and EMS Coordinator Tony Vagueiro on their extraordinary careers and wishing them long, happy, healthy retirements.

The NJSEA Medical Staff received a shoutout from News 12 New Jersey a little while ago!

As the FIFA World Cup at MetLife Stadium comes to a close, tonight's shoutout belongs to the dedicated medical professionals from the Meadowlands who helped keep hundreds of thousands of fans safe throughout the tournament.

Well… it’s over.

After months of planning, preparation, training, and countless hours of hard work, the 2026 FIFA World Cup has come to an end.

We want to extend our sincere gratitude to all of our mutual aid partners, as well as our local, county, state, and federal agencies. Your professionalism, teamwork, and unwavering support helped make this an incredible success. Large scale events like this are only possible because of the partnerships we’ve built together.

Over the coming days, we’ll be sharing memories, photos, and stories from behind the scenes and the front lines. We’ll highlight the experiences of the members who worked these historic events and helped make them safe for everyone.

2 years of planning had gone into preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and without our dedicated staff and partners, our preparedness for the Meadowlands hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the success of EMS and Medical Operations at NJ/NY Stadium would not have been possible. Pictured here are members of the NJSEA Medical Staff that were present for not just the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but were also a part of the NJSEA EMS team for the 1994 FIFA World Cup that had a number of matches take place at the old Giants Stadium. These team members have remained committed to health and safety of the patrons, tenants and visitors of the Meadowlands Sports Complex for over 30 years and we recognize them for their service and dedication.

The FIFA World Cup Final is over! To the hundreds of thousands of fans that visited NJ/NY Stadium, we are honored to have been a part of such a historic event and help in keeping you all safe and healthy!

While the World Cup may be over, our work is never done! Next weekend we are back to regularly scheduled programming diving right into concert season and NFL pre-season! Stay tuned to see more of what we do here at the Meadowlands!
