Wilkins Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 3 along with our mutual aid partners just cleared up from a fire on Roland Rd in our 1st due. Upon arrival we found the deck to be on fire as well as other items located outside of the house. During exterior operations, crews went interior to check for extension into the house and luckily other than a melted window frame, there was no extension.
The better question here is how did this fire start outside at 4 a.m.? Everybody was sleeping. Nobody around the house at all. Well, all of the fire safety tips you read are true believe it or not. The resident had grilled the evening prior and thought the charcoal was cooled off all the way. 🚨 Spoiler alert, it wasn't. Over 6 hours later from the time he put the charcoal in a bag and in his trash can, it caught fire and created the incident you see here.
So, when they say to make sure the coals are cooled all the way before disposing of them, this is why. Luckily nothing major happened and no body was hurt but let this be a lesson on being mindful of things like this.
