πŸ”₯ A Close Call & an Important Reminder About Lithium-Ion Batteries πŸ”‹

Recently, Hagerman firefighters responded to a fire involving a lithium-ion battery. Fortunately, the situation was brought under control before it could become much worse, but it serves as an important reminder of how quickly these batteries can become a serious fire hazard.

Lithium-ion batteries are found in many everyday items, including e-bikes, scooters, power tools, laptops, phones, and other rechargeable devices. When damaged, improperly charged, overheated, or defective, these batteries can enter thermal runaway, causing an extremely fast-moving fire that can produce intense heat and toxic gases.

⚠️ Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Tips:
β€’ Always use the manufacturer-approved battery and charger.
β€’ Never charge batteries or devices on beds, couches, or other combustible surfaces.
β€’ Avoid charging e-bikes, scooters, or large battery packs near exits or escape routes.
β€’ Do not leave batteries charging unattended for extended periods.
β€’ Stop using a battery immediately if it begins swelling, leaking, overheating, smoking, or giving off an unusual odor.
β€’ Never use batteries that have been damaged, crushed, punctured, or exposed to fire.
β€’ Keep batteries away from excessive heat and direct sunlight.
β€’ Never place lithium-ion batteries in household garbage or regular recycling. Use an approved battery recycling or disposal location.

🚨 If a lithium-ion battery begins smoking, popping, hissing, or catching fire, get everyone out, stay out, and call 911. Do not put yourself at risk trying to move the battery or device.

This incident had the potential to be much more serious. Take a few minutes to check the rechargeable devices and batteries in your home and make sure they are being charged and stored safely.

A small battery can create a very big fire. Stay aware and stay safe. πŸ”₯πŸ”‹

Thursday, members of our Dive Team spent the day training with new equipment and sharing their knowledge with some of our newer members who are interested in becoming divers.

It was a great opportunity for our experienced divers to sharpen their skills while helping the next generation of team members learn more about what it takes to be part of the Dive Team.

Great training, great teamwork, and another step toward keeping our team prepared and ready to respond! πŸ€ΏπŸš’

Yesterday, our department was activated for a motor vehicle accident reported to involve a vehicle on fire.

Upon arrival, the Chiefs advised incoming Rescue 4 and Squad 5 that all occupants were safely out of the vehicle, but the vehicle was actively burning. Squad 5 quickly stretched a line and extinguished the fire.

Great job by all members on a quick and efficient response! πŸš’πŸ”₯
