Florence Sturdivant Public Library

Florence Sturdivant Public Library Our building is open for visitation Tues 10-2, Wed 12-7, Thurs 4-7, Fri 4-7, Sat 10-2

I would just like to tell our patrons that sometimes the wind coming across the front of the library is particularly fierce. We tend to have pretty windy weather around this time of year. I may not be able to put the OPEN flag out when it is really blowing hard, I have to try to put it in a holder over my head and am almost blown off the step-stool. There have been occasions where it blows hard enough to blow it out of the holder and it could damage cars/trucks going by. It also blows our OPEN sign around if it is facing the wind so I may have to put it up against the front of the building. So please look for the sign if the library should be open but the flag might not be out.

Well, I'm getting ready to go to the library and as I look out my bedroom window, I see snowflakes starting to gently fall downward. If the snow starts coming down fast and heavy I may have to cut my time short and close a bit early, but we'll just wait and see. I only have to come a short distance to come home so I am pretty sure I will be at the library at least until 4 PM. But we will not be open from 4-7 PM this evening. Anyway, be careful if you have to go out and be safe.

02/24/2026

Just to let you know, I am plowed out and dug out so I will be at the library today (Tues., 2/24) from 10 AM to 2 PM. It is predicted that we are due for about 1-3 inches more snow tomorrow (Wed., 2/25). According to the prediction it shouldn't start until about 11:30-12 noon and go into the evening. I am planning to be at the library at least from 12-4 unless the snow is coming down fast and hard. I may have to close early if that is the case, so please call ahead to make sure I am still there (207-255-0070). However, the library will not be open from 4-7 PM.

WOW!!!!! What a day!! I'm not sure if I will be able to get out tomorrow in time to get to the library, especially since the prediction is that we will be having snow continuing until 7 AM tomorrow morning, and there is going to obviously be lots of digging out. So, the library may not be open tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 24th. If you are planning on making a visit to the library, please call after 10 AM to make sure I am there. The phone number is (207) 255-0070. Hopefully everyone had a quiet and safe day today. As for Wednesday, it appears that Mother Nature has some more "unsettled" weather in store for us then as well. Unless it is really foul, I am in hopes that I will be able to be at the library from 12-4 PM at least, but our evening (4-7 PM) librarian might not be able to be in. The good news is that there doesn't appear to be anything in the works for our Saturday hours so I will see you then. Looking ahead it appears that "March is coming in like a Lion", since we might be having more snowy weather Monday, March 2nd and again on Wednesday, March 4th. Just what we need, right?

It's 7:10 AM with the ground, trees, vehicles, and all, covered with snow that is still coming down steadily, not blizzardlike but steady enough. Several inches at least on the top of my car and doesn't show any signs of letting up. I think it's safe to say that the library will be closed today and this evening. Probably safe to stay home, if possible, and out of the way of the snowplows. Water St. is pretty well covered, and a pickup truck just went by leaving a couple of furrows, so I imagine the roads are slippery and treacherous. Stay safe today.

Apparently, we are under a weather advisory for from 7 PM this evening (Tuesday, Feb 10th) to 7 PM Wednesday, Feb 11th. The library will definitely be open its regular hours on Tuesday, but Wednesday will depend on how much snow we get overnight Tuesday and throughout the day on Wednesday. Remember to call the library if you are planning to come in, just to make sure someone is here and you are not "weathering the storm" for nothing. The hours are 12-7 PM and the phone number is (207) 255-0070.

I just saw a few flakes of snow and would like to remind you that if it is snowing, you should call the library before you head out to come visit us, just to be safe and make sure we are there. We don't have an answering machine to leave a message if we are there or not but if you call our number during the hours we should be there and there is no answer we are probably closed. The phone number is (207) 255-0070. If it has been snowing mostly all day, we may be closed our evening hours because our librarian for those hours has to get a ride or walk to the library.

It's beautiful today with the sunshine, blue sky, and blanket of white over it all. The library will still be closed today. I have a lot of cleaning up to do today and digging out. I used to really enjoy the "day after a big storm" activity and still do--to a point. However, that was 20+ years ago when I was closer to 60 years old, had more stamina, and didn't mind the cold as much. I'm slower now and need to take more rest breaks and stop to warm my fingers and toes. But the clean-up still needs to be done. I do expect to be open tomorrow from 12-4 PM and hopefully Jason, our 4-7PM librarian will be able to come in for his shift. He has to get a ride or walk so I will check with him later.

I hope everyone has been warm and comfortable today during our snowstorm. All reports that I have seen predict that this storm should continue until about 3 AM tomorrow (Tuesday). It may still be quite a mess to try to get around so the library will not be open. I'm not sure I will be able to have myself dug out in time to open on time, or know when my snow-plower will be able to get to me so I can get out of my driveway. Sorry for any inconvenience. If Mother Nature is over her tantrum, we should be open regular hours on Wednesday

01/25/2026

Good evening. I hope everyone is safe and warm and ready for the storm coming. I am not sure if the library will be able to be open on Tuesday, January 27th, if the storm goes over into Tuesday morning I may not be able to get out of my yard. If the weather report is accurate and the "mess" is under control by Monday, I should be able to have the library open. At any rate, please call the library during the hours we should be open (10AM-2PM) to make sure. We don't have an answering machine so no answer means no one is there. The phone number is (207) 255-0070. During our evening hours (Wed., Thurs., and Fri. 4-7PM) if it is very cold, snowy, etc., please give a quick call to make sure the library is open. Our volunteer for those hours has to walk usually and might not be able to come in if it's really cold or nasty. So take care and stay warm, hope to see you soon.

I'm sorry to not have communicated with you for quite a while. My laptop has been somewhat cranky and prone to tantrums. Hopefully it has gotten over its difficult phase and decided to be more cooperative.

I am sorry to report that the library will not be open today, Friday, Jan. 16th from 4-7 PM. Jason, our library volunteer will not be able to be in. He has to have someone drive him or he has to walk. The roads in town have not been plowed or sanded (the road in front of my house has not been touched if that's any example) and a neighbor, who had to go out, says they are quite slippery. Today's prediction is that we will most likely have more snow coming this afternoon. I have not been able to find out how heavy it might be so it might be wiser to be cautious.

We are at the time of year when we may not be able to have the library open because of weather conditions. Please check this Facebook site to see if there are any closings or change of hours. In all cases, if the weather is questionable, please call the library phone number (207-255-0070) during our regular hours. No answers means we are not open.
