History at the Park!

An historic marker in Beaver Creek State Park stands in the field where the FBI's Public Enemy #1 – a.k.a. Charles Arthur "Pretty Boy" Floyd – was shot and killed by federal agents and policemen from nearby East Liverpool in 1934. The notorious bank robber, who was apparently trying to return to his home in Oklahoma, had eluded capture for more than a year before being spotted in Ohio.

After dawn on October 19, motorists passed by, observing two men dressed in suits lying by the roadside. They thought it suspicious and informed Wellsville, Ohio, police chief John H. Fultz. Fultz investigated with officers Grover Potts and William Erwin. The lawmen and fled into the woods, pursued by two officers, while Fultz went towards Floyd. Floyd immediately drew his gun and fired. During the ensuing gunfight, Fultz was wounded in the foot and Potts was wounded in the right shoulder. Floyd fled into the forest. Floyd remained on the run. News of the search quickly spread. Local police in the surrounding areas were mobilized, and a team of BOI agents was quickly dispatched.

On October 22, Floyd was able to hitch a ride to East Liverpool, Ohio, soon after he was shot and wounded by pursuing officers, who then arrested Floyd and formally placed him in federal custody. Floyd died 15 minutes after he was shot. His last words being, “You got me twice.”

STREAM STOMP CANCELLED FOR THIS SUNDAY, AUGUST 16. This event is rescheduled for Sunday, September 13 from 12:00 - 1:30. The current water level is way too high to be safe to do the collections, and storms and rain is predicted for Sunday again. Hope you can come in September!

Meet Matthew Smith and Ryan Moss from ODNR Div. of Natural Areas and Preserves in the parking lot of Beaver Creek State Park, 12021 Echo Dell Rd., East Liverpool, for a fun time finding critters that live in Little Beaver Creek, a Wild & Scenic River. They will identify what is found and talk about water quality and how it affects these organisms. You must wear boots or closed-toe shoes to get in the creek for this activity. Come prepared to have fun and maybe get wet!! After the program you can have a picnic in the park and then visit the Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center in the afternoon.
This event will be cancelled in the case of unsafe high water or rainstorms.

So much History at our Park!

Canals helped connect Ohio to the outside world. From the Ohio River to Lake Erie, these waterways crisscrossed the state before railroads began taking their place in the 1850s.
Even so, many canals remained in use until the destructive Great Flood of 1913.
The Sandy and Beaver Canal was perhaps Ohio's most difficult canal to construct. This waterway took nearly two decades to build and featured numerous tunnels, reservoirs, dams and locks.
Upon completion in 1846, it connected Bolivar, Ohio with Glasgow, Pennsylvania. A devastating flood that occurred just years after it opened left the canal inoperable.
The ODNR Historical Marker in Beaver Creek State Park tells the history of the boom-and-bust cycle that often accompanied canal building. This marker is next to Hambleton's Mill—the only remnant of a canal-era ghost town. ​This historic gristmill carries the name of the Hambletons, a family that migrated to Columbiana County in the early 1800s from the East Coast. The town they created, Sprucevale, lived and died by the canal's success.
A great way to see the historic remnants of the Sandy and Beaver Canal while talking in some of Ohio's most gorgeous scenery is to hike the Vondergreen Trail located at the end of the Sprucevale parking lot. This trail takes hikers past historic canal remains, like Gretchen's Lock, through hemlock-covered hollows and alongside the Little Beaver Creek.
