Visit the Museum of Ceramics to see locally produced treasures from the 19th century to the present. This is the only museum in the United States celebrating the history of hundreds of potteries in one small geographic area over three centuries. Collection of over four thousand objects highlights ware made mainly within five miles of East Liverpool. We have the nation's largest public display of a

ward-winning Victorian porcelain Lotus Ware. See dioramas with figures which bring history alive. Elementary and middle schoolers enjoy our Scavenger Hunt - just ask when you arrive. See the ceramic trophy celebrating a carrier pigeon's flight, and a rare 1850s hand marbled water cooler. See our display of 48 shaving mugs. Enjoy spotting priceless examples of late 19th century hand decorated ironstone ware. Just as every person has a story, so too does every item on display! We are a cultural resource for our community and a tourist attraction for visitors from across this nation, and from almost fifty other nations in recent years.

Clay Academy Day 5! ✨

This morning, our campers took a “ghost walk” at Riverview Cemetery and learned about many of the famous potters buried there, and their contributions to East Liverpool. Thank you Alpha Care Calcutta for transporting us today as well as Tuesday to the Fiesta Tableware Company!

Lunch was generously provided by Glenmoor Italos.

Following lunch, campers participated in a Door K**b Toss Competition. It was a close game with only a two-point difference!

We finished the afternoon off with a Closing Ceremony where family and close friends came to recognize our campers and all their achievements at Clay Academy.

We’d like to thank Hancock County Savings Bank Charitable Foundation and True North for sponsoring our Camp Counselors for the week. They were a huge help and greatly added to the success of the week!

We cannot wait for next summer! 😎🎉

Clay Academy Day 3 and 4! ✨

Our clay campers have had a fun couple of days!

Yesterday, campers began their day playing doorknob toss. Then, they made mosaic birdhouses with help from Lady Slippers Judy Fannin and Sandy Votaw. Lunch was generously provided by Nicole Fitch from L&B Donuts and Catering. Thank you very much. Campers then had more hands-on experience working with clay. It was a great day!

Today, campers toured Keystone Printing Company and learned about the meticulous, traditional art of hand-set typesetting used by printers many years ago. Keystone Printing Company has served our community for over a century. Thank you for the wonderful tour!

Lunch was generously provided by Meredith Aracich from Tim Hortons in Calcutta. Thank you so much!

This afternoon, campers learned about glazes and the techniques used to finish their pieces.

Day 2 of Clay Academy! ✨

We started the morning playing Doorknob Toss, an East Liverpool pastime. Then, we headed over to the Fiesta Tableware Company (FTC) located in Newell, West Virginia. Clay campers were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the factory and learned how the iconic Fiesta ware is manufactured. Campers witnessed that the true heart and soul of the FTC is its dedicated workforce, some of whom represent generations of local pottery families. Above their factory entrance door states “Through these portals pass the best potters in the world.” The legendary phrase serves as a daily reminder of the dedication, skill, and pride of the artisans who craft every single piece of dinnerware. Thank you Fiesta Dinnerware for having us today!

Following the tour, campers participated in a “Paint a Plate” session at the factory. They used vibrant glazes to create a one-of-a-kind keepsake that they can treasure for years to come.

Lunch was generously provided by Friendly Jacks. Thank you very much!

Following lunch, campers were back in the clay studio practicing their handbuilding and throwing skills.

It was a great day! 🎉

Day 1 of Clay Academy! ✨

The day started with a step back in time at the C.C. Thompson House. Built in 1876, this Late Victorian Italianate house was the original home of local pottery owner Cassius Clark Thompson. By hearing stories of C.C. Thompson and his family, the campers gained a deeper understanding of how the pottery industry shaped the community and provided livelihoods for generations of local workers. The tour also doubled as an interactive lesson in architecture and historic craftsmanship. Thank you, Mr. Russo, of the East Liverpool Historical Society, for the wonderful tour.

To keep their energy up, campers were then treated to a delicious lunch generously provided by The Fresh Cafe & Bakery. Thank you so much! 🥪

Following lunch, the campers enjoyed hands-on experience working with clay. They practiced both handbuilding and throwing skills. 🏺

Now it’s time for a good night’s sleep so we can do it all again tomorrow! 😴
